Today a nice tour to Vrtača from Ljubelj. Along the border path to the hut at Zelenica. Then along the marked path to the Vrtača summit. Descent the same path. Cold and windy at the top.

To Vrtača from Ljubelj on the marked path. To Zelenica and in the forest the path is icy, small crampons or chains would be very welcome. Further on, rocky parts alternate with snowy ones. Sunny and panoramic.

Today on Vrtača, up Y. Conditions in Y not good, jump bare and very hard to cross. I advise against ascent to Vrtača this way.

Agree with previous. Really little snow this year. Last jump (or two) really problematic. Need to be quite skillful to get over. SE also scant snow and at 1800m already on rock.

Finally we made it.
Vrtača up Y (left branch), southern gully down. Conditions perfect!

Crossing the southern slopes on the way back to Zelenica was a bit tricky, because there in the sun-exposed snow it sank a bit among the bushes, but nothing to complain about.

Watch out, stones fly down both in Y and the southern gully. I took a fist-sized one to the shoulder in Y; one gentleman took one to the hand in the southern gully. And on the descent in the southern gully we met several hikers without helmets... Folks, put helmets on your heads.

From here the right exit variant is better visible, straight up, as an optional diversion.11

Descent down the southern gully, the snow is holding well. Hard up top, by our time it had softened lower down where the gully exits the shade.13
