Hi. Has anyone been to Jalovec these days? I'd appreciate any info on conditions regarding snow and required gear.

Hi. Was there last week, winter gear needed through the Ozebnik and above it. A few meters below the summit there was a steep hard snow field which couldn't be bypassed, so we crossed it with ice axe and crampons. Rest of the ridge rocky. Regards

Went yesterday from the bivouac. Wonderful path, quite exposed, most snowfields can be avoided, but over one we had to first make a track, then it went velik nasmeh

Yesterday on Jalovec past the shelter under Špička. In between there's also a small snowfield, no problem. A bit further still some snow on the path, easily bypassed. lp

Yesterday to Jalovec via upper skrbina and back over Kotovo sedlo. Before entry to climbing part under škrbina large snowfield. Winter gear needed. Currently still passable. Soon probably not due to overhanging cornices (few meters deep). Over Kotovo sedlo no issues. Need to cross 3m small snowfield.

Yesterday I went from Vršič to Jalovec via Mali kot, descended to the hut under Špička, where I overnighted. Path is maintained. There is no easy path to Jalovec, but still I recommend this direction (up via Mali kot and down to Špička), if you decide for a circular tour from Vršič, and not the other way around.

Today quickly to Vršič, because showers were forecast.

Everything in flowers, real miniature paradise gardens everywhere, lots of butterflies and intense heat.

Yesterday from Planica via Kotovo sedlo to Jalovec, a bit off-piste. Weather perfect except turbo wind at the summit. Some visitors, but still had the summit to yourself easily. Path, fixed ropes, ... BP, and at the end in Tamar for štrukeljki nasmeh

29/7/2020 - Jalovec

My friend decided to hike the SPP from Maribor to Debeleg Rtič without breaks in "classic style" and finished it on Saturday - 26 days. I decided to accompany her through the Julian Alps as long as there is time / strength / will.

From Vršič we set off early towards the hut under Špička. The path is nicely laid out and most of the time we walk in the shade. On the way we meet a snake or two, female hikers, male hikers and we progress nicely. At the hut under Špička we lighten the backpacks a bit, since we'll return the same way. Friendly girls make us coffee and we also talk to a fellow hiker who found out that two mountain runners told him the wrong time estimate for Jalovec and his wife is probably a bit worried, he has no phone signal to say the timetable is different.

We head to the summit, which still takes us more time than we thought at first. Slowly one gets far nasmeh. The path is without special features, on one part the steel cable is freshly torn off because apparently a rock hit the anchor bolt. Towards the summit it starts to fog, but we follow the markings without problem. Unfortunately there were no special views at the summit, so we quickly turned back. Ah, and we also call the Dom pri izviru Soče to overnight there. And we descend back to the hut. There we have a short chat with foreign hikers, an Australian offers us dried alligator and some kangaroo (no joke, like beef jerky) and a shot of local schnapps. We calm down and head towards Trenta. The weather becomes beautiful again (for Portorož) and so it burns us the next few hours to the hut at the source of Soča.

What to say about this hut? Super, in the middle of the village, electricity yes, water undoubtedly since the spring is next to it. To me it's rustic and touristic (food very good), no showers (???). And the best is that there are common sleeping areas under the ridge of the roof which beautiful weather heats to 2000 degrees. But when you open two small windows towards the dark it cools a bit. A bit. For some. For me it was horrible, good that I was also sunburnt from hiking and somehow fell asleep. velik nasmeh

Given that Dom pri izviru Soče is by the road and doesn't need any special supplies (helicopter/cable car), they have very high prices. Especially if you compare to high alpine huts. This is real squeezing of people jezik

I couldn't get over the fact that they don't have a shower. Most visitors came by car anyway. I missed something more hearty: Jota, Ricet, ...

Prices are ok... when you add it up if you don't save for two people it's quickly over 100EUR/day. Plus another 20-30 for sleeping.

What bothers me most is the price of water at Komna and the Mountain hut at Krn Lakes - price of water and portion size.

ppegan10. 08. 2020 12:18:24
OK, shower not really priority, at least not in high mountains, more luxury, here they could really have it. They obviously have Soča for shower mežikanje On Komna prices like that since I remember, Matica can afford such prices, that's how it is. If you think you pay similar amount (or more expensive) for beer/water in our main tourist cities, suddenly not so expensive anymore mežikanje

Lukito10. 08. 2020 12:22:06
My opinion is beer is fine at 4EUR. I'll pay it if I want it.

But price of water which is necessity is ripping off. Same happened at airports until EU passed decision that 0.5l water can't be more than 1EUR. So let them arrange also in mountains 1.5l not more than 3EUR. Dolič I think has 4.5EUR and they bring it by helicopter and that is easiest to understand. That on Komna not (4.4EUR/1.5l), so I gave also cable car price so everyone can calculate themselves.

And portion size at Krn lake hut just not OK.

I used the free weekend and nice weather to visit this wonderful mountain. Started on Saturday via Kotovo sedlo up, descent to Špička where the hut was fully occupied. So I continued to Vršič and slept there. On Sunday then via Šitna glava and Hanzova dol to Slemenova špica, then over Črne vode back to Tamar. More in pictures... it was beautifulnasmeh

On Saturday we went to the King on the royal pathjezik Loška Koritnica - Čez Brežice - Plešivec - Škrbina za Gradom - Zavetišče pod Špičkom - Jalovec - Kotovo sedlo - Loška Koritnica.
The trail is well marked, protections are OK except on descent from Kotovo sedlo a bit damaged, trail to Plešivec goes a bit before Čez Brežice saddle.
We spent a beautiful day on this mostly solitary trail.
