Similar stories happen in some other huts too. It all comes from the greed of some societies, consequently they don't get caretakers, and volunteers are getting fewer. Why would some society member work on a voluntary basis, while the president and some board members pay themselves various compensations. Anyway, preparation for a trip means checking multiple sources where you're heading and what's the situation there.

On one side greed of societies, on the other some potential caretakers think it's a job where you can quickly earn good money. All this has a common background - absurd crazy consumer world, where chasing material goods takes first place, where daily, at every step everyone from politicians, "businessmen" to media convinces us that this is the only right way of life and thinking.

P.s. the virus of fleecing with parking fees has the same background...

ppegn, the summer season used to start from 15.6 to 15.9; at least until now I was used to that, I assume I'm a bit older than you, retired, I have no need for luxury in the mountains, but happy that I don't have to carry sandwiches and beer myself. My dog wasn't too happy with the water a bit below the hut, which I assume on weekends; if I knew the hut isn't open, I would have taken that too, one nice mountaineering greeting, which you rarely hear in the mountains anymore.

Least problems with huts if you don't visit them at all if there's really such a need for beer one or two or three, carry them yourself oh, and greetings in the mountains, I have no problem with that, if someone greets me first I greet back, when I greet first I also get a greeting back. Even from foreigners. You're not that important that everyone has to greet you first, right?

Jusk, basically I agree with everything. But... say for some child the main motivation can be strudel and stamp in the hut. And then gradually he realizes that it's really nice in the mountains. But if he gets upset right at the start because he didn't get what he went up for... then everyone can think whatever...

For years and years the hut was open and water in the trough flowed even in winter until it froze. Then they figure out they sell more if they close the water, unfortunately also the hut and you're left without anything.... Some like to hike, some make a little effort, although we have limitations and every extra weight burdens us. Bad experiences with unannounced hut closures teach us to carry everything ourselves, but when you get there and nearby take your own drink and food from the backpack, they look at you strangely "as if" what did you haul we have everything, you don't let the society earn

I support all who commented and everyone is right in their own way, PDs whine they can't get people to work, they should first ask themselves why they can't get people? who will work for them for 24% of turnover, they should rent out the huts and I guarantee no problems, yeah, just then much less money left for society leadership. Nice weekend, safe steps and good mood to all hikers heading to the mountains. GOOD LUCK!

@Tine: water is 10 min walk aside at the spring below Bašeljsko sedlo. All year (even in summer rarely dries up). For next time 😜

At Kališče, where water flowed from the tap, we filled less than a liter, the faucet was really closed, sign "Water not potable". This thing I knew from years ago, as they post this notice because of Hasap. If there's a notice, no additional checks needed. We drank the water, nothing happened to anyone. Sign that would direct hikers lies on the ground by the hut leaning against a tree. As for timetables, pure nonsense. Below a bit above parking, sign mountain hut 1.30. At the hut - direction sign Mače 1.30. Will someone finally get moving and do something. Everything I wrote is not criticism, but pure fact. LP!

@jprim: with the timetables you mention, there's nothing wrong. On the sign at the junction for Kališče and Srednji vrh, 15 min walk from the parking lot, the stated time is 1h 30 min to Kališče, which is realistic for moderate walking and 800 elev. 1h 30 min from Kališče to Mač, 950 m descent, is also not too much, even for those obsessed with criticizing.

For racers, you say? It depends on who; 900 elev can be done in one hour, without running, just walking. Of course those who can't do it excuse that we are such runners, racers.. no, just walk at our own pace, without running. It obviously bothers some a lot. When I once said for one path from start to goal (not 900 elev) 1hr 15min I think, I did that path up and down in that time, immediately attacked that I ran, but no, I didn't. Just don't stop every 10m to admire that flower, that pebble, there's an animal.. even with pace that's a sprint for some up here you can see a lot on the path
