Kladivo and Veliki vrh - Košuta

Hello, on Tuesday or Wednesday I'd head out for my first real winter visit to a 2000er, to Veliki vrh – Košuta via one of the mentioned routes: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/matizovec_veliki_vrh_kosuta_/11/74/167 http://www.hribi.net/izlet/globoka_dolina_veliki_vrh_kosuta_/11/74/2853 It looks like I'd get sun and around 5 °C on top. Actually, the temperatures shouldn't go below 0 °C until then. Sunday/Monday night it supposedly last snowed. In the book Winter Ascents in Slovenia Košuta is classified as a demanding snow tour. Unfortunately, I don't have the book now. To which starting point will it be surely easier with the car? Is it safer to go straight to Kofce gora first? With sufficient but not very experienced knowledge of using crampons and ice axe, will it go without major problems? What extra dangers (off-trail walking, avalanches, …)? Would it be better to go on Wednesday, when the trail will probably already be more trodden? I don't plan to walk on full snow or ice much, or rather little. Addition: if conditions are OK, willingness and time available, would any noteworthy danger await me on the path Kofce gora – Kladivo? Or, since I want to conquer a 2000er, would it be better for me to go to Debelo peč first? It's listed among easy snow tours. Probably from the south... http://www.hribi.net/izlet/pri_rupah_debela_pec_/1/84/35 http://www.hribi.net/izlet/planina_zajavornik_debela_pec_/1/84/2430 http://www.hribi.net/izlet/dolina_krma_debela_pec_/1/84/1213 Otherwise, I have other lower peaks in my backup plan, so something will be on the schedule. Thanks for the help and all the best in 2014 for conquering the peaks!

I recommend Debelo peč past Blejska koča for your first winter ascent.

It'll be tough lakkon (we know each other!), new snow, new avalanches but with higher temperatures it'll transform quickly. To Veliki vrh we go via Kofce and to Kofce gora and along the ridge but not at 3rd grade. Debela peč might be OK, but without snowshoes, skis hard, the only 2000er is Viševnik usually after a few days of sun there should already be a good track.

I agree, valeri, and you don't need to worry about the possible upper choice. Regards

What is sufficient? Not even very experienced knowledge of using crampons and ice axe, assuming you haven't been to a two-thousander in winter yet? I can tell you first-hand (was there on New Year's Day), that the ridge to Kofce gora is far from easy and doesn't let you pass just like that, as one usually gets stuck already at the traverse, and higher up the exposure is very great. I myself have some experience, but still felt a bit uneasy... For a start, Debela peč, Raduha, Peca, ... will be plenty.

Hello, I'll repeat my post from a couple of days ago. On Sunday I'd go with an acquaintance to my first winter visit to a two-thousander and Veliko Kladivo – Košuta is the primary plan: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/matizovec_veliko_kladivo_/11/344/480 Lately I've done Košenjak, Ratitovec, Dobrča, Tolsti vrh, Konj, Velika planina, so I have some winter experience. Will the path be tracked? Any extra hazards (avalanches, ...)? I don't plan to walk on whole snow or too exposed. If conditions are OK, willingness and time, any notable hazards on the path Kofce gora – Veliki vrh? Or would it be better to go elsewhere since I want to conquer a two-thousander? What do you suggest? That there isn't mostly steeper more dangerous slope that requires advanced use of ice axe, crampons, so mainly basic use + without or really minimal avalanche risk. Say that this time Storžič, Raduha, Peca, Viševnik, Debela peč, Begunjščica, Grintovec are out. Acquaintance who might come suggests: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/konec_ceste_na_pokljuki_veliki_draski_vrh_/1/397/546 http://www.hribi.net/gora/stol/11/53 – which starting point? (Tinčkova koča, Poljana, Valvasorjev dom) I myself add maybe: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/kokra_podlebelca_kalski_greben_/3/318/1778 http://www.hribi.net/izlet/planina_podvezak_velika_zelenica_cez_prag/3/697/2359 (or start somewhere lower cca 300m) Otherwise I have other lower peaks in reserve plan, so something will be on schedule. Thanks for help.

And you don't like the previous answers? Too proud to conquer Raduha, Debela peč or Peca? What's wrong with these peaks? My first winter peak was Debela peč and it didn't seem belittling at all. Why do you suggest rather Veliki Draški vrh, Stol or Kalški greben, while wanting no major dangerous slopes (all listed peaks actually have them)? Can you actually arrest with ice axe, not just theoretically? Until you have serious winter tour experience, we usually go to winter targets whose summer approaches you've already done. Asking if the path WILL be tracked, if there WILL be avalanche danger, is like looking into a crystal ball, until then no one (or more people) has gone it in the given conditions and assessed.

I like this the most: " That there isn't mostly steeper more dangerous slope that requires advanced use of ice axe, crampons, so mainly basic use" Arresting with ice axe on a slope is basic use, not advanced, and train it well on some milder hill, Veliki vrh and anything on Košuta aren't suitable for learning. Or you'll keep asking us here until someone says: yeah, just go, Košuta is a little thing in winter.

People, thanks for the answers, with which I'm so-so satisfied. It's best just to try somewhere, and wherever you get to, you get there. I'll turn back if it doesn't go. I practically always go ''with head to fun'' or adapt to the conditions according to my abilities. Otherwise I wouldn't ask anything at all. I even took mini crampons + ice axe to Konj (1803m) on Wednesday, since I didn't get the most reliable info about the trail conditions. I went Kraljev hrib - Pl.Dol - Konj. No, in the end I didn't need them. I won't go to the mentioned peaks that I wouldn't visit now, since either the probable companion has already done them this winter or I myself did them not long ago, but on dry ground, and I wouldn't repeat them so soon. Isn't there really any other 2,000m+ mountain that you would recommend to me?

ZoranV very nice. Do you perhaps know if the ridge is completely snow-free? Thanks. Best, Nino

From Veliki vrh to Škrbina no snow anywhere. At Škrbina we met a large group who came from the direction of Turn and had no winter gear, so I'd say it's passable without problems.
