Kladivo and Veliki vrh - Košuta

This morning, for the last time this year, I set off for a trip along the Košuta ridge west of Škrbina; start from Mrzli studenec, along the ridge to Kofce gora, Malo and Veliko Kladivo, then back to Kofce gora, both Toplar summits, Veliki vrh, štruklji and Mrzli studenec.
The path was dry with rare snow "strips", from Toplar to Veliki vrh locally muddy. I had no need for crampons. Sunny weather with very little wind, actually on the kitschy side nasmeh

I met quite a few hikers and chatted briefly with some.
Also: road from Jelendol to Mrzli studenec mostly dry, just some icy patches towards the end, but drivable – just a bit more caution.

No logbook, stamp torn off - cultural, nothing to say!

I set out a bit differently today. First past Kofce pasture to the western Toplar summit, then to Veliki vrh, on the return to the eastern Toplar summit and over Kofce gora to Malo and also Veliko kladivo. I descended towards Šija, where I "supported" myself with žganci and cabbage. Nice weather, only the wind along the ridge bothered a bit in some places.

Yesterday, already before six in the morning, start from the logging yard under Matizovec, of course with a headlamp. We welcomed the sunrise on the Kofce. The sun came out somewhere around Storžič and bathed the top of Veliki vrh, which was our first goal. Good that there was a pile of snow around the box on the top, otherwise we wouldn't have known that we already have winter. There was no frost at all. Then the traverse over Kofce gora, past Mali Kladivo to Kladivo. There are practically no snow patches, the path is mostly dry. On Kladivo there is a logbook box, but no book. The stamp was also stolen by someone. If it is somewhere on the rock, I don't know. Down to Planina Šija, past Planina Ilovica back to the car. It was a beautiful day. Almost no hikers. We enjoyed the beautiful views.

The sun bathes the Košuta ridge like this.

The hut at Kofce is of course closed, I think it will be open for the holidays. I didn't see any notice.

At the summit. The box for entries and stamp is here.

Signs at the top of Veliki vrh. The Germans call it Hochturm-2088m.

Now down there. It looks far - to Kladivo about one and a half hours.

Past Kofce gore. 1967 m - also named Mali turn.

This pole is supposed to mark the mountain somehow.

If I'm seeing correctly, Toplar should be that peak in the middle.

It looks like this closer. We don't go to the top, only cross its slope where the path leads further.

The ridge continues ahead to Košutnikov turn. The tour to here is long.

On pic. 8 it's not Toplar. It's further west, the last peak in the ridge before Veliki vrh.
As Sirt1 already wrote, on pic. 18 it's not Malo Kladivo. Kofce gora (1967 m) and Malo Kladivo (2036 m) are two mountains. Stanko Klinar in his Karavanke guide says for Kofce gora that it's also called Mali turn; elsewhere he writes that the ridge naturally connects via Mali turn (1938 m) and Kofce gora to Veliki vrh.

What's the condition on the gravel roads to the starting points - is driving possible with just winter tires or is there ice somewhere?

To the parking under Matizovec the gravel is dry. At Kofce gora I was wrong. From the Karavanke map - central part from PZS I read correctly, just wrote wrong.

Yesterday I also went for the last time this year from Mrzli studenec towards planina Šija to Kladivo, then along the ridge to Malo Kladivo, further to Kofce gora, then also to both Toplars and finished on Veliki vrh. The weather held so I was on all peaks still in the sun, a bit windy though bp.

Peaks in Košuta make headaches for many. Except Veliki vrh, Veliko Kladivo and Košutnikov turn there are no exact peak markers. We traversed it all ridge-wise this year and ..... it was nice nasmeh

This traverse is described very accurately in his Karavanke guide by Klemen Janša, published by PZS 2010. He calls Kladivo - Veliko Kladivo. From there towards Košutnikov turn I haven't traversed yet. On Košutnikov turn I was this year even via secured route from Austrian side and also from planina Spodnja Dolga njiva years ago. Full traverse I'll try to do in summer 2016.

Thanks for the information. I must say, we also had a pretty accurate map, but there are so many peaks/little peaks that it kinda carries you away mežikanje

We laughed when we met other hikers and figured out where we were. I recommend the traverse to everyone. We went up the climbing route to Veliki vrh and then along all the peaks. Balm for the soul and heart. Just at the end some transport back to Ljubelj is welcome.

On a few bends towards the top there's a bit of ice, but with some caution it's no problem.

Yesterday we headed into the Karavanke, although the weather wasn't showing the best. In the mountains it's real winter, lots of snow, so proper gear was mandatory. On the always popular tour we caught some sun too. nasmeh

Despite not the best weather forecast, Metod, Matej and I decided to go to Veliko kladivo. Started from Mrzli studenec and continued over Šija to Kladivo. Even got some clear skies. Continued to Malo kladivo and over Kofce gora to both Toplarji and of course Veliki vrh. Descended to planina Kofce for coffee and struklji. Also did one loop through Dovžanova soteska. Path without features, still quite some snow but no major problems. Wind on ridge not too strong either.
