Avalanche warnings are issued by ARSO, but I regularly monitor conditions in the mountains for Slovenia's Mountain Rescue Service, which you can't do from your home armchair, but you have to go into the field. As for today's snow fairy tale, don't worry, it wasn't my first time there in winter.

Kerlc will be the one who comes to Kredarica for New Year. There is loads of dry snow there, the ascent will be tough because the steep terrain offers no support to skis. There are quite a few cornices and slabs waiting to be triggered by additional load. As I saw, no avalanches have slid down yet, only on the steep walls of Vel. Draški vrh. Let each judge for themselves if heading up there.

Kerlc was already one there yesterday. . Visible tracks on the Kredarica webcam. Just no description anywhere

The third avalanche danger level worried me a bit, but the desire was stronger and I went at least to check how it is. The road to Krma is icy, there are some tire tracks, with proper caution no problem even without chains. In Krma by Kovinarska koča I got the last somewhat usable parking spot at 6:30, 10 minutes of work with the shovel made it usable. I warmly recommend crampons and a solid iron shovel to repeaters; parking spots are (too) few, snow very hard. The track was solidly made, today at least 20 of us on Kredarica (approx. half hikers and half skiers). Meteorologists say there is no excessive interest in New Year's Eve on Kredarica yet, but many decide at the last moment. Four even tried towards Triglav but turned back soon. Ski descent solid, mostly soft snow, some more nasty crusts. It didn't seem really avalanche-dangerous to me. Through the forest, classic enjoyable slalom between trees. If there had been at least 5 cm of powder on hard snow among the trees, it would have been too sweet.

Well done to those who reached Kredarica, despite the snow surprisingly stabilizing quickly in such cold. Compared to the Pokljuka ridge, which had a solid 25 cm of dry snow on a firm base, there would be much more on Triglav. Most likely, at least half of the precipitation on the Pokljuka ridge fell as rain, the rest being those 25 cm of powder and even more of the final snow (despite the proximity) than on Kredarica. On Kredarica, more southern snow fell constantly, which later froze, and there was less of that final dry powder than further southwards (passage of the front) on Pokljuka.

Yes, yesterday it was really perfect at Kredarica. The track was first made on Monday by Ivan Šavs. Best regards, Jure - Cveto

What about wind direction?? It greatly affects avalanche conditions, i.e., snow depth.

Almost no wind! Just back from Kredarica now. Conditions really excellent, so absolutely recommend tomorrow. Snow not sinking, so no need for snowshoes, today even without crampons and ice axe since yesterday I saw super conditions. Best regards, Jure - Cveto

Jure, thanks for the tips. Tomorrow still at work, the day after tomorrow action. Up there on 12.12., then without crampons over Kalvarija impossible, it was so icy. Now you say not needed. I wonder if hikers with crampons broke the ice enough to make a track, or if the possible new snow bonded enough with the base to walk safely without crampons? Best, Tone

In my humble opinion without crampons (at least in the backpack) in winter in the hills you have no business anyway. I hiked to Kredarica yesterday with crampons, not that I necessarily needed them, but it was more comfy. Some spots below Kredarica itself are icy as usual. Personally I choose other sports for adrenaline rather than hiking in winter mountains without crampons (tried it long ago, wouldn't do it again).

On Kredarica there are unlimited people. Parking lots full. because some were already so diligent and were in Krma at 11:00. And two vehicles had to reverse quite far so that we could pass. but up there it's really fantastic. Best regards, Jure

After a long time I'm posting myself. With friends Jure - Cveto, Tomaž and Ivan Šavs we were enterprising, and already at 9:20 we were admiring the surrounding peaks. The weather this week is more than favorable to hikers, so Jure has climbed to Kredarica for the third time this week, Tomaž second, the undisputed king is undoubtedly Ivan Šavs, who was today for the fifth time in a row in front of our highest mountain hut. In the next two days he will climb to it twice more! Feat (although I shouldn't use the word, because Šavs doesn't do it for any feats, but exclusively because of his own impulses. Namely, those who know him know that at his 55 years he gives a run for their money to many very well trained (mountain) runners) has even more weight (readers here please don't get upset in advance due to ignorance of times and hold back from moralizing about speed and non-/enjoyment etc.) because every day he needs only 2 hours for the ascent, no signs of fatigue visible. In short, regardless of the ascent speed we enjoyed like rarely, thanks to weather/avalanche conditions, peace, tranquility, wonderful panoramic views. Passers-by watched us a bit sideways, because we did the ascent in regular running shoes, but conditions were ideal for it! During descent we counted approx. 332 or 334 ascending people, so there will be that many people and 17 jackdaws celebrating New Year's on Kredarica. All the best in the coming year and safe and smart steps wherever you go!

Klemen, glad we met. Unfortunately I didn't have mountain running gear with me to follow you. Congrats on the very good times achieved! I arrived at the top about 3/4 hour after you. Otherwise yes, ideal conditions for hiking (mountain running). Views crazy, shame to miss them.

klm two hours every day.. just hats off as they say! Congrats! As for your observation about peace and tranquility I would think twice if I met approx. 332 (two up or down) hikers.

Pohodnik11, regarding the number I was joking, just like Tomaž and I joked with passers-by (ascending) during descent, saying they are 219, 220, 221... etc. hiker who will overnight on Kredarica. Fact is the number is much smaller, actually I didn't count them, I just made up the number in jest, it's certainly at least 6x/7x smaller - but at least regarding jackdaws it holds true! Bojan, I'm also very glad we met! Conditions were ideal for running! You did well, but the important thing is that you enjoyed it - which I don't doubt! As I told you, all the best in the coming year!
