I had them on and also went up, but went directly straight up (and also down) when the snow started (around 2000 m). In my opinion easier, although it wasn't frozen. Lp.

What's the condition/situation like for Krn's neighbor Batognica?

A couple of days ago I was on Krn too. Some of us had crampons, some without! Well, by one's own judgment, because slipping from Krn has no good consequences! But the snow is quite south-facing and for comfortable walking you need to get up earlier. Batognica from Krn, still quite covered with snow!

I used the nice day yesterday for the ascent from Lepena to Krn summit. To the upper cable car station the path is dry. Further to the lake just some snow patches. Hut at Krn Lakes is open during holidays. Real snow starts beyond the lake. Snow mostly holds human weight, only around pl. Polje sinks deeper here and there. Conditions for the ascent were excellent, more demanding part only shorter direct ascent to the notch.

Nice greeting to all. I'm wondering if anyone was on Krn recently; the conditions interest me. How much snow is left, and which path would be good to go up. Thanks

Snow is on the north side, i.e. from Krn Lake. South slopes above planina Kuhinja mostly dry except some snow patches.

Hello! For the upcoming weekend we plan to go to Krn via Komna or over Peske. Has anyone maybe walked to Krn via Batognica and knows if the path from Batognica to the notch is still snowy? As far as I remember, there's quite a big risk of slipping there if there's still snow. Thanks for the information. Regards Matjaž

Jany: what is the snow like on ascent to Krn? Can snowfields be crossed without crampons? Thanks for answer.

The snow on Saturday was south-facing and wet. It sank a few cm deep, just right for safe walking without crampons. The slope where the snow still lies is not steep, so there is no problem stopping in case of a fall. The steeper slopes are already bare anyway. Best regards and safe steps.

In the morning I drove to Lepena, from there past the mountain hut at Krn Lake up to Krn. This time luck is really on my side, as I have a free day, plus promise of a nice sunny day from our excellent forecasters. Longer stop at the jewel of the Krn range, a real balm for the soul. Further on the path without issues, the persistent snow also presents no obstacle. At the top of Krn, a view to die for! The hut keepers are very friendly too, in short, tomorrow there will be one more, probably the last day this week with good weather for rambling in the hills and mountains, so just path, path, feet. Good luck! lp J

On Sunday for the Krn visit we chose a slightly longer path than usual. Early in the morning from the Hut at Krn Lakes we set off along the marked path to Veliki Šmohor. We continued towards Mali Šmohor and at the saddle between them descended left to the marked path from Planina Razor to Krn. We followed it all the way to the foot of Vrh nad Peski and climbed up the unmarked path to this "desert peak". We returned to the lower marked path and climbed to Batognica, where after almost 100 years the horrors that happened here are still visible. Again down to Krn Notch and up to Krn. Then past the hut back to Krn Lake and to Lepena.

The two of us on Saturday 2.7. set off from the Kuhinja pasture to Krn. On the direct path we needed 3h10min as planned. At the top superb views over the entire Julians and across the borders all the way to Grossglockner. For the descent we chose another path and went down to Krn Notch and up to Batognica. Along the path there are plenty of interesting remains from WWI. Then descent to Prag saddle and further along the foot of the scree to Lužnica lake. Along the path we also met cute marmots. Then the last descent to Kuhinja pasture and the loop was closed, at the same time one of the nicer and more interesting paths we have walked so far. For the described descent we needed 4 hours.

I'd ask if there's still snow on Batognica or if it's completely melted, because I plan to head to this peak soon, which I haven't conquered yet, and if it's possible to sleep in the caves by the pass from Krn to Batognica, lp
