Yesterday's ascent to Krn from planina Kuhinja already took place in late spring conditions from the start. In the lower part on pastures above the planina, snowdrops and daffodils are already blooming and nothing smells of winter (temperature at the parking lot around zero). The ascent through the gully and part of the slab in good conditions with hard snow passes quickly; at the top we were rewarded with a wonderful view. Since we were in no hurry, we observed with binoculars what was happening around. Obviously, the ice on the lake holds, as three are up there!? At the shelter more than a dozen visitors and twice as many ascending from the Kožljak direction. Descent around 12h in already well-softened snow.

I also climbed yesterday from planina Kuhinja to Krn. There was some misty low cloud below, but on top it was wonderful, especially the view with heavenly blue sky towards the Julijci. Snow to the shelter was quite south-facing, but I still had "those" crampons on. For descent it is recommended to have an ice axe and crampons. Yes, really nice ascent. (At the shelter I met two "korenjaks" who came from Lepena. If you two are also on Hribi.net, please send me some photo from the top towards the lake and Komna, because on top my camera battery failed... It was nice to meet you... Safe steps ahead, best, Minca )

Yes, Minca, send me your email address to jovan.cukut@telemach.net and I'll send you all the photos. I hope you didn't have problems on the descent to Kuhinja. Best, Jovan

Wow! As much as I could find out, since it's the south - sunny side, there should be no klož, snow should already be reworked. Probably need to go up quite early when snow is still frozen, for the return it's not so important anymore..

Photos were taken on Saturday (26-03-2011) morning. We started at 6:30 from Planina Kuhinja and reached the summit in a good 3 hours. Summit was in fog, so no views at all. Snow starts above 1800m. In places it broke through. On descent slushballs formed. Winter conditions up top, spring in the valley.

At five in the morning with a buddy we start from Jesenice over the former border crossings Rateče and Predel, past Bovec to the village Krn, where we park at the big parking lot. Start around seven past the hut at Planina Kuhinja, a bit higher Planina Slapnik. You can drive here by car if you don't mind (two SUVs were already parked, one as it turned out later from the Gomišček hut keeper). Trail is dry up to about 1700-1800m, then avoid snow fields, then snow to the top, mostly still frozen. Some go straight to the summit on "steps", we zigzag on the trail towards the ridge left for a while. Reach the top in about two and a half hours. Views wonderful, especially towards the Julians still covered in thick snow blanket. On descent from summit to hut the keeper pleasantly surprises us, whom we overtake already babbling, but we didn't even know. He says the hut is still under construction, haven't managed to fully renovate since last year, and it'll be worse as the cook left. But still dry logs crackling in the stove, carefully stored in the hut, and various drinks and snacks are being prepared. Reached the top without crampons which we had anyway, without ice axe and gaiters, on the way back gaiters almost mandatory as snow wet. Crust gave way, in places sinking up to the butt. Initially possible to glissade in boots for 200m, then snow breaking through. Still descend the snowfield to the end where the ascent trail appears. No mud anywhere! On the trail under the snowfield we surprise a viper sunning on a rock, so careful! To the car in a good hour. Wonderful day ends with cold radler in pleasant company in one of the inns in Kobarid.

Hi everyone! Does anyone know the conditions for ascent to Krn via Silva Korena path? Is it possible (with full climbing gear) to reach the summit already? Also interested if it is possible to sleep in the winter room or if the Gomišček hut is open? Thanks for replies.

If you go up during the weekend, there is a chance the keeper will be up there, as Krn is quite visited on weekends. On Saturday 2.4. I met the keeper who opened the hut for the first time this year, lit the stove and prepared some snacks. Winter room is open and there is quite some space to sleep. For SK path I don't know, there were no tracks then. Best regards

I'd wait a bit longer for Silvota paradise guys and otherwise the gully there nearby is still nicely hard and packed.

Today from Planina Kuhinja to Krn. Below the summit still some south-facing snow, in the valley real spring.

How much snow is there? Would crampons be needed?
