No significant changes compared to previous post. Today beautiful day, warm, reached summit in short sleeves. Met two just below shelter and one more below summit, with two Drežnica guys descended part of path together. Weather started slowly spoiling soon after noon but whatever, we were already at Kožljak height

Hello! That was a nice tour, a real autumn one. But when completely snow-covered up to under the steps, that's something unique and "only for the chosen ones" as the alpine trainee Šerbec once told me, when we trudged on New Year's morning to the summit and dug the snow-covered bivouac entrance. Best regards and stay safe in the mountains!

Swiss, I agree that the tour is nicer when there is enough snow but also more demanding. I would add under that old picture of the former hut on Krn. Below it says Monte Nero. They called Batognica Monte Rosso. Below it also says Monumento rifugio Alberto Picco. That means monument and shelter or hut. Alberto Picco was an Italian officer who fell in battle when the Italians occupied Krn in the first war.

Italian name for Krn Italians during the conquest of Slovenian peaks gave them their own names. Batognica thus got the name Monte Rosso either due to the characteristic red chalk rocks or due to all the spilled blood. Skutnik, due to Lieutenant Valeria Vallera who fell in the attack on Krn summit, got the name Punta Vallero. They called Krn Monte Nero specifically due to a wrong translation. They wrote "Krn" as chrn according to pronunciation and concluded that it actually means "black". The black color in Italian is nero. Wikipedia

Also as a curiosity. The officer fell when the Italians, soon after entering the war with Austria, drove the Hungarians from the summits of Krn and Batognica. So only a third of Batognica remained in Austrian hands. That's also visible there because of the wall.

Picture of the former hut on Krn. Or rather, monument to Alberto Picco. Officer who fell in battle.

The ramp of stacked stones by the stairs is still preserved. Actually, today's shelter is on the same plateau as this fascist monument.

Does anyone have info on how it is, or a photo of snow conditions on the Krn trail from Planina Kuhinja. Thanks.

The Italian hut-monument was actually an ordinary hut, as the interior shot shows. It had an added entrance portal made to look like an ancient sanctuary, so it looked monumental only from the front side. The hut fell apart quickly after the war as the second picture shows, and in 1951 they built Gomišček's sanctuary on its foundations.

Last night Alenka from Krn village asked me if we saw wolf tracks on Mrzli vrh. She wrote they had 12 sheep torn apart and eaten in Krn village in three days. Only 30 meters from the house. They don't remember anything like that. Also all roe deer have disappeared. They hid. Tracks are 8 to 11cm.

SL 18; at Leskovec you step on snow and if you stick to the right gully to the top you don't step on bare ground

Has anyone gone on the Drežnica - Krn path (Silva Korena path)? How much snow and ice?
