No significant changes compared to previous post. Today beautiful day, warm, reached summit in short sleeves. Met two just below shelter and one more below summit, with two Drežnica guys descended part of path together. Weather started slowly spoiling soon after noon but whatever, we were already at Kožljak heightnasmeh

2 January. I was really surprised how much snow had melted since last time. Six degrees on Kuhinja pasture in the morning a little before eight o'clock. Only two cars. Later quite a few of us gathered on the summit. No need for winter gear. With Maksij I went from Zaslap pasture over Kožljak. Plenty of time. I know that area. And we avoided snow on the path. Turned left towards the edge, where I checked Korenovo, which still has quite some snow. Yesterday it was windy. But the day was quite nice. We descended the ascent path. Over grasses. Crossed some snowfield which was still left.

30.01.2022. Since Maksi and I started the ascent to Krn, we also finished it at the end of January. We weren't early. We started walking shortly before nine. Above Kožljak two stones flew down the gully. Luckily no one was below. We went the normal path. We would have preferred to go around, but where the path from Drežnica comes there is still lots of snow. It was also windy. We went steeply to the shelter. For the summit winter gear was needed because of the icy base. The descent was safer with crampons while the snow lasted. Though not much. We were alone on the summit. I expected more hikers for Sunday. The sky was again cloudless. Though the morning didn't look the best. Maksi this time accidentally led me to the remains of the eagle that was once on the hut door on Krn. When the Italians owned it. And hello to Anka with whom we descended and chatting made the walk pass quickly.
You know who was the happiest.1

Hello!
That was a nice tour, a real autumn one. But when completely snow-covered up to under the steps, that's something unique and "only for the chosen ones" as the alpine trainee Šerbec once told me, when we trudged on New Year's morning to the summit and dug the snow-covered bivouac entrance.
Best regards and stay safe in the mountains!

Swiss, I agree that the tour is nicer when there is enough snow but also more demanding. I would add under that old picture of the former hut on Krn. Below it says Monte Nero. They called Batognica Monte Rosso. Below it also says Monumento rifugio Alberto Picco. That means monument and shelter or hut. Alberto Picco was an Italian officer who fell in battle when the Italians occupied Krn in the first war.

Italian name for Krn
Italians during the conquest of Slovenian peaks gave them their own names. Batognica thus got the name Monte Rosso either due to the characteristic red chalk rocks or due to all the spilled blood. Skutnik, due to Lieutenant Valeria Vallera who fell in the attack on Krn summit, got the name Punta Vallero. They called Krn Monte Nero specifically due to a wrong translation. They wrote "Krn" as chrn according to pronunciation and concluded that it actually means "black". The black color in Italian is nero.

Also as a curiosity. The officer fell when the Italians, soon after entering the war with Austria, drove the Hungarians from the summits of Krn and Batognica. So only a third of Batognica remained in Austrian hands. That's also visible there because of the wall.
when you have a dog with you, you find something more.1

The ramp of stacked stones by the stairs is still preserved. Actually, today's shelter is on the same plateau as this fascist monument.

Does anyone have info on how it is, or a photo of snow conditions on the Krn trail from Planina Kuhinja.
Thanks.

The Italian hut-monument was actually an ordinary hut, as the interior shot shows. It had an added entrance portal made to look like an ancient sanctuary, so it looked monumental only from the front side.
The hut fell apart quickly after the war as the second picture shows, and in 1951 they built Gomišček's sanctuary on its foundations.

Krn 13.02.2022. This year we go up with Maksi on Sundays. Nice weather holds on that day. This time in February it was just a bit cold. Forecast too. Minus 5 at the parking lot on Planina Kuhinja at eight when we started walking. We met quite a few known hikers. Already at the parking lot locals David. Milan and three more known ones who went behind us with a dog. Then we went together to the shelter. While chatting the shelter didn't distance itself at all. Usually it does. It was well visible. We went the usual path, although I was thinking to go over Kožljak but didn't decide. At the shelter we put on crampons for the summit. Although Sunday, not too many visitors. When walking on the slab, an eagle flew near us. Davorin managed to photograph it. Rarely see it. White-tailed eagles are more common. Also cold at the top. Nice views. At the shelter we did some practice stopping with ice axe. Although not enough space. Descent in nice weather same path back to start. Nicely used Sunday. Maksi already has three Sunday ascents this year to Krn.
We all went along the familiar path.1

Last night Alenka from Krn village asked me if we saw wolf tracks on Mrzli vrh. She wrote they had 12 sheep torn apart and eaten in Krn village in three days. Only 30 meters from the house. They don't remember anything like that. Also all roe deer have disappeared. They hid. Tracks are 8 to 11cm.

Krn yesterday. Windy all the way. Crampons are needed for the summit and on descent as long as there is snow, if going by the path. There is considerably less snow on the edge.
