Yesterday nice hike from Komna to Krn Lake. To Bogatin saddle the path is dry, but about fifteen minutes before top of Bogatin saddle rockfall. From saddle initial part of path snow (no major obstacle (winter gear not needed)). After return to Komna watched GRS intervention for hiker bitten by viper a bit above hut at Komna. Nice mountaineer's greeting.

Today 9 11. memorial hike - twentieth in a row. Due to bad weather and higher lake level ceremony exceptionally at the hut. Fewer hikers than last year. During the ascent it was raining all the time, higher up it was snowing. First time president Pahor came on foot in bad conditions and gave speech.
View from the path in the morning. Before that it was pouring rain.1

We were also at Krn Lakes on a memorial hike and at times it was a winter idyll.

I wanted to go to Krn, but winter gear is already mandatory, avalanche danger is visible towards higher mountains, maybe next year, nice event and soldiers in uniforms, interesting, touch of mountains and a bit of history at once.

Great conditions — hard snow, crampons grip nicely. Recommend two ice axes for more ambitious goals.

Has anyone been at the lake these days? I'm interested in where the snow starts when going up from Lepena and if there's any ice?

I was there on Sunday. Snow starts at the hut in Lepena with a few cm and gradually increases. Up at the sign with years there was about 1 m. At the hut also around 1 m. No ice.

On Sunday first time up in this beautiful corner of the Julian Alps. Start in Lepena, up the mule track, up, up, up (a bit boring, monotonous) then along the nominally flat path to the hut, which looked abandoned from the front line, but actually packed with people behind. Already on the way up never seen such a crowd of "pilgrims"; from babies to "100" year olds. Fascinating in a way.

After refreshment to the lake and wonderful view of Krn! Worth a visit big grin
Lepena; cars far down in the valley1
Start of the path well marked; the entire path is also well marked and maintained2
View down about 200m drop...which mountain is in the background? Bavški Grintavec?3
Mulatjera well maintained, but it drags on4
After the end of the mulatjera, the path is wonderful, a real paradise on Earth5
The appearance of abandonment is deceptive6
Further towards the lake7
The path descends a bit; on the right is a sheepfold. Which peak is in the picture? Šmohor?8

Really nice view of the peaks10

31/7/2020 - Krn Lake, Krn, Shelter, Mountain Hut at Krn Lake

My friend decided to hike the SPP from Maribor to Debeleg Rtič without breaks in "classic style" and she finished it on Saturday - 26 days. I decided to accompany her through the Julians as long as there is time / strength / will.

We started from Komna, past the hut below Bogatin and then over Bogatinsko sedlo to the other side to the Mountain Hut at Krn Lake. We stopped there briefly to check the weather forecast. Since they had a hot shower and space for sleeping, we decided to overnight there. So we offloaded unnecessary stuff from our packs again and headed past the lake to Krn.

To the summit without any issues, the weather started to sour a bit when we reached the saddle below the summit. Quickly to the top where we met a Dutch family and asked them for a photo. Then quickly to the shelter below Krn and back towards the lake. The weather really turned nasty and thunder started. The Dutch had an elderly lady with them who was descending dangerously slowly. Back to the saddle and towards the lake we met some hikers who were going up, the weather getting worse.

Almost at the meadow with the hunter's hut, the first heavy thunderclap. I wasn't sure if it went into the pants or not, after a few steps I realized no. So we switched from walking to galloping and on the way, with the loud accompaniment of thunder, lightning and rain, we got a bit washed. The good side is that we were low enough with no excessive fear of a lightning strike... which I can't say for the others who were still heading up?

Well, we galloped back to the Mountain Hut, where there followed a meal, showering and another meal smile Are you kidding me? Portions are degustation-sized, I can't even call them kid's portions. For adult price. Maybe they carry goods from Komna in backpacks? Everything else really super, but food (portion) is a total rip-off.

Hi, has anyone been from Lepena to Krn Lakes? What are the conditions, is the path icy, are crampons needed?
Is it suitable for a 7-year-old child?

Thanks and regards.

Winter gear needed. In current conditions for child that age, path not suitable.

Yesterday snow started about 100 elevation meters before the Hut and it's more or less continuous to the lake. Below the path is dry, at two/three places there's a snowfield next to it or snow in the gully, but it can be avoided. The lake is mostly frozen over.
