bogdan 28.2.2010 Under the full moon we went from the crossroads over beautiful frozen snow across Bdn to the top of Mali Golak. The moon shone beautifully, in the hut they had excellent štruklje.

Sometimes I really don't know if this is the personal albums of individuals or a real forum about conditions in our mountains. LP Starakapa

Far from defending this kind of posts, but for all whiners there is a solution, namely - just don't look at every picture individually. Guaranteed to save you some time, especially positive energy. Usually those who complain are people who want more of their own such posts, but don't have the balls for it

To "pull" the debate back towards the mountains . Today Golak (actually all three) wasn't friendly at all. To the Iztok hut the walking was pleasant, onwards ... without crampons unnecessarily strenuous. The trampled path was a pure slide, without "steps" that had slipped away for those who went back on their soles and flattened the steps. Off the path snow collapses, though the top layer is hard crusty. Right at the top it's very hard - borders on icy. Cold, wind, fog ... that marked today's afternoon 5 minutes on top.

Didn't my track from Veliki Golak help at all?

I skied from the Golaks and not along the ascent direction but just following my nose .

Ksena, you wrote you crossed all three Golaks (if I got it right). From where (from which), where (following nose) did you ski down then and where (to valley) did you arrive. Obviously you're knowledgeable, so it interests me where from there (from summits) it's most worth heading, given it's quite bushy and (also) in winter orientationally demanding? Thanks!

From Predmeja I went first past Iztok hut to Mali Golak (1495m), then descended east to Srednji Golak and slightly up again to Veliki Golak (1480m). First time, so skiing from it I really went more by nose .... towards W. Skiing at start was more traversing and pushing through trees, as I wanted to get as close as possible under Mali Golak. When succeeded, continued in already known direction towards Predmeja - Lokve road. For non-knowers, and also for me who did this route first time, the tour was quite orientationally demanding. I know only descent from Mali Golak to Iztok hut and straight from top of Mali Golak south, left side past "spruce island" to road. Along road bit down then again into forest to clearing and towards Predmeja - Lokve road. Probably some other variant. For my taste still better descent from top south than to Iztok hut.

Well if you've already posted lots of SUCH pics then you're really the last to complain. About the balls, probably have to take your word, anyway only strongest guys can admit true size of their dangly bits

Ksena, to be honest, I always only hike on foot in these hills, but I was curious where approximately you boldly ski down, given that the trees are mostly relatively dense. Thanks. I'm writing because from the start it seemed to me that there's only small chance you crossed all the way to Veliki Golak. I don't think you meant to mislead or anything like that, but that you unwittingly fell for the confusion of names (Golaks) and their drawings on various maps, as well as many more or less dubious route descriptions "over" the Golaks (it's often read for example that Slovenian Mountain Trail crosses all three Golaks). Well, what I want to say is that you very likely after descent from Mali Golak (towards W) first crossed smaller gully and then (let's call it) forepeak of Srednji Golak (over 1450m) and then reached summit of Srednji Golak (NOT Veliki), which is also like Veliki high 1480m. From here you descended traversely back towards E, as I understand. In short, if you really wanted to Veliki Golak, you would have to from Srednji quite steeply descend (for over 80 height meters) towards W to pass between Srednji and Veliki (there trail junction: SPP turns north towards Škrbina - Mrzla Rupa, unmarked south towards Staniš), and then make up the aforementioned descent meters uphill to summit of Veliki Golak, which is S neighbor of Medvedji vrh. Perhaps some local will add something to help clear these (all too) frequent dilemmas (those with swapping height/position of Mali with height/position of Veliki no more), otherwise in this case probably right reference is web Atlas okolja (unlike many others). And Ksena, if of course in interpretation of your movement I'm not mistaken (which I allow), don't blame yourself at all, I know several serious and quality describers of mountain (pathless) routes who made same "mistake" at Golaks as you, but only one who discovered it afterwards. Since I know he will read this, as well as that it would be awkward for him if I praised him publicly, I reveal myself to him quietly here.

I allow the possibility that the last peak really wasn't Veliki Golak. When I was on Medvedji vrh some time ago I got info that it's there, west of it, Veliki Golak. Skiing from these peaks is really just brushing trees that grow really densely, only under Mali Golak there's clearing - logging site that allows good zigzagging ..if you hit it of course. But if conditions are good, skiing can be quite good, otherwise worse than from Medvedji vrh, but still.
