Mali Golak

Šodrovec described the "golaško" confusion very well. Srednji really has a forepeak and summit, the ridge runs approximately from east to west. The pass where SPP turns towards Škrbina (Vojskem) is Vratca. But when you're on Veliki Golak, which has the largest bald area, you know there's no larger one ahead of you, just a sea of lower hillocks to Javornik and Nanos. But there's a circular tour that includes all three, one of the nicest. From Veliki you easily descend freely and pleasantly to Staniše (or into some deep pothole), from there on the marked path that leads from Korenina to Mali Golak to the first road, then right along it past the hollowed rock to the road junction under Iztokova koča

Anka knows those areas very well. nasmeh
But since I'm (at least regarding toponyms) very curious, I'd ask from which source (maybe from locals?) Vratca came as the name for the saddle between Srednji and Veliki Golak.

Purely by chance and in passing I also met the guy whom Šodrovec secretly praised for discovering the confusion in naming the Golaks and quietly revealed himself to him. He was of course very happy about the praise, but being shy as he is, he also blushed a little. zadrega

Today's Mali Golak bathed in the sun. The path past Iztokova koča is trodden, packed and ski-tracked nasmeh. There's still a lot of snow, its structure depends on altitude and time of day. At the base it was south-facing in the afternoon, at Iztokova koča and above it transitioned to a lighter and more wet variant, on top it was firm. The view north revealed Julijce wrapped in clouds, the view to the sea was veiled by lumpy clouds. The smaller Golaks were visible best nasmeh.

Ksena, Veliki Golak (in winter easier recognition because of its whiteness) stands transversely to the first two, summit on right a bit higher, towards left descends to saddle and rises a little again. Summit of Srednji Golak on photo (6) a bit right of Veliki, they almost overlap.

Anka thanks for the lesson....now I won't be in dilemma anymore on which hillock I am or was.nasmeh.

Since there are only winter photos, I add some September ones, just because I dropped by the Mali Golaks today. I thought there would be more people.....On the path I stumbled upon some remaining raspberrieszavijanje z očmi. To me this trail seems very diverse in landscape and pleasantnasmeh.

Some mountain fruits might perhaps be found on the path towards srednji or veliki Golak, since a month ago with the little one we picked quite a few, and we climbed all along the way :-)

Nice that you two were in good spirits. Yesterday I descended a bit towards srednji, but then turned back because I didn't know how much path awaits me and if the trail even turns towards srednji summit.

Suggestion for a nice walk lasting about 6 hours of moderate hiking, suitable especially on hot days due to nice shade and especially in the second half of August, when the path is full of raspberries and also blueberries:
Leave the car at the small parking lot by Smrekova Draga: on the eastern side by the sign.
Head north along the cart track between trees, along which we bypass entire Smrekova Draga from the right and come back to the road on the other side. From here right past Ančina hut. When we reach the junction turn left towards the hut under Golaki, past the hut to Mali Golak (names on the attached picture are wrong...), over Srednji to the saddle where marks clearly direct us left towards Vojska. The path is well marked and followable and takes us to the forest road, along which left to the "main" road and left to the start.
N.B.: Map "GORIŠKA 1:50000" comes in handy.
Path from the saddle to the forest road doesn't go straight as drawn on the map, but nicely winds along ridges past sinkholes and dolines, one feels it's constantly leading right somewhere, but no orientation issues, as it's well marked and followable.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I understood correctly, starting point can also be Iztokova hut, turn onto paradano towards Vojska and continue, so then finish with Mali Golak?

Such a super short path, for some non-strenuous afternoon, the hut was already closed at the beginning of October.

Sabina7: Yes. Since the path is circular you can start anywhere: either on the eastern part of S.Draga by the sign, or from the road/parking under Iztokova hut. The loop can be done in both directions. To me it's nicer counterclockwise (as described above). It's also worth descending into S.Draga itself along the way. A nice and well-followable path leads to the bottom. And with open eyes: how the landscape transitions from deciduous forest through conifers to scrub.

Has anyone been to Little Golak these days? How's it there? Probably no snow left, as rain took it.

I don't believe it melted so fast. Usually there's snow on Golaks even in April (not for dilcat though). We still have it in cities, let alone in hills. LP

Otiv, but at least for central Slovenia I dare claim that snow there somewhere between 500 and 900 m asl will mostly be gone, since temperatures are at least 5 degrees Celsius higher than in the lowlands, plus the SW wind strongly helps with snow melting, which there isn't in the lowlands. But winter will come again soon...nasmeh

On Sunday there was about 30-40cm of it on Kuclj and Čavn (quite dry). On Golaks which are 300-400m higher and a bit more inland on the plateau there was surely much more. I don't believe that rain took it.

@bemjamin
If I told my mom "tomorrow there'll be snow" she'd reply "Don't call the devil!". That's it, we hill folk and skiers like it, others not so much.nasmeh
