On Saturday, 29.12. towards Mangart Saddle. Start of the path to Mangart pasture is steep and partly icy, then walking is most comfortable with snowshoes or skis, as the snow sinks quite a bit. Snow height varies, quite a lot of wind-blown snow, from the last tunnel onwards the path isn't broken, as wind covered it well with snow. So we waded into the slope via winter variant, but only to the ruins, as the path ahead was problematic... huge amounts of windpack in gullies, and it also "crackled" quite often. Everything else in superlatives... weather, views....

For that I should already write a sonnet but my poetry knowledge isn't five-star. Man is always drawn to that high world, where he could almost hug the sun. One must experience this, sing it to himself, how beautiful it is to live for such ascents. Igor bravo and watch your head!

Following good Igor info he gave me, my colleague and I also headed to Mangart saddle today. We start at Mlinč on the track over Stožje avalanche, past Mangart alpine pasture, right after the pasture we choose the path over Gorenji stan (some chose the gully Igor mentioned yesterday, but near the top they had big trouble exiting it as it's quite steep) to Mesnovka, which was the right choice and then a bit on path a bit our own to ruins of former Sillani hut above the last tunnel and then to Mangart saddle and another 150 height meters towards Mangart, where we finish our ascent. Yeah today weather and views were phenomenal, bit windy. There we stop for a solid hour, as it'd be shame to leave this paradise right away. For descent back to saddle and below Špičje we reach some 200m higher above previously mentioned ruins of former Sillani hut. Snow conditions phenomenal just right softened around 11am. Lower we drop into gully. Entry to it is in first sharp bend (200-300m) after fourth tunnel. Upper part very steep, then flattens. Then on path back to pasture and over avalanche to car. Nice weather, dream views, excellent snow what more can you want from such tour. It was pure ski touring poetry.

And, what are they like? I'm mainly interested if the conditions are suitable for a relatively safe ascent tomorrow

Congrats guys for such ascents, you're real legends. Yesterday I did it with snowshoes right along the road, to the first tunnel quickly, further on a bit slower, it's well covered. Above Mesnovka even slower, views and peace took their time. Towards the last tunnel you can see that it avalanched quite a bit, so I didn't reach the ex Sillani hut. Alone, just with snowshoes > that really doesn't work. In short, for the soul and heart.

Winter routes on Mangart have their days numbered. In the dark the melody of tawny owls accompanies me, at dawn above Mesnovka birds chirp. At sunrise I'm already at the saddle observing mists on Mangart. Snow nothing special-rotten. When I arrive below the wall I choose route and decide for winter approach which is in its last breaths. Just below the summit a snowstorm with strong wind catches me. I return along the ridge and then via Italian route. Since the hut is still closed I linger at the saddle where the sun warms me nicely. At the old hut I watch playful marmots, then back to the valley.

Just right conditions for training sessions. Climbing up the scree slope that's firm with thin slush layer. A bit on top, then sliding back to valley on gojzers. Shame snow will melt right now when it's best .

Mangart - how far by car, what's the path to the saddle for walkers.

Road still closed. But can reach the bridge where hiking trail to pasture branches off. Snow starts from pasture on, but it'll melt there soon too. Path normally passable via shortcut to last tunnel.
