Urbancek Judging by your wonderful pictures from Mangart, they have cleared the landslide on the road and no more parking problems. Is that correct? Regards

I just want to mention, I bought the Julian Alps guide as Mr. Igor recommended,...book is interesting and you learn a lot, but the path from Tamar over Kotovo sedlo to Mangart is not described, so obviously not all paths are described in it like here on the forum

Tine Mihelič - Julian Alps (4th revised edition 1992), is a bit old, but the paths haven't changed... Page 226 (marginal number 843) From Tamar over Kotovo sedlo, page 227 Approach to Kotovo sedlo from Koritnica, page 259 (marginal number 933) Along the eastern ridge. No need to climb Via della Vita and no need to combine much with the path to Vevnica... Take the guidebook and map Western Julijci PZS 1:50 000 and study it... You climb to Kotovo sedlo on the described path, descend to Koritnica on the reverse described path and climb Mangart again on the described path! Igor is completely right! And I wish you pleasant hiking on remote and beautiful paths!

Today's ascent via ferrata Via Italiana, continuation on Slovenian and return on Italian was chasing good weather just before rain. Everything turned out well, first drops fell only after a few km drive on the way back to the valley . Conditions are as follows ... ferrata Via Italiana is technically passable without problems, protections are flawless. Slovenian has no snow patches hindering ascent, but quite slippery. Italian also no longer has mentionable snow patches that might hinder passage. On the entire path no need for any winter gear, but appropriate knowledge and experience are necessary. Road to the saddle is repaired, stones removed, no-entry sign still stands in the middle of the road .

That's why it's nice to hike in the mountains because of such "views"...

Mangart lakes - Nogara - via italiana - M.saddle - Slovenian - Veliki Mangart - Italian - M.saddle and back - via Normale to lakes (conditions 6.8.2013) Path from parking at upper lake is well marked, also through forest, past waterfall (fresh red dots added on right) and across grassy slopes below Nogara bivouac. Bivouac as usual this time in JA full of Czech backpacks, we met some such beginners on the via ferrata. Via italiana is fine, all secure, exceptionally good and dense pegs, except some loose cable, which is typical for Italians anyway. If you compare the via ferrata e.g. with Cjajnik under Košuta, it's shorter and easier, but more open or airy and the walls you climb are much steeper. These days sun lights it up till about 12:00, afternoon in shade. Ascent to summit via Slovenian route requires caution due to rockfall or scree, self-belaying, if you managed the via ferrata you probably won't need it anymore. On Italian route I think some new cables added easing the steps, ... but especially here you still see lots of "weird tourists" without any proper gear. It goes, ... but?! If returning to Mangart lakes, above saddle branches marked path across grassy slopes to Nogara bivouac, then down valley. Little spring below bivouac still had some water today. For whole path from lake via ferrata to summit and back you'll need about 9 hours, including some stops for snack or photos.

Yesterday three enthusiasts decided to conquer Mangart a bit differently - from Tamar. A bit after five in the morning we were already in Planica. The ski jumps already show in all their grandeur. The Ponca cliffs already glow in the first morning rays. A bit after six we were already at the hut in Tamar. Since we had a long way to Mangart ahead we went straight past, otherwise I like to stop here. The sign says 8 hours, but need to get back too. Tamar hut is at 1110 m. Path over scree to junction for Jalovec at Jalovška škrbina and Kotovo sedlo drags on. Quite a few started so early like us. I see all turning to path to Kotovo sedlo. Probably all going to Jalovec. To Veliki kot - we reach 2002 m, we already have almost a thousand meters ascent and three hours walking. At Kotovo sedlo we stroll to bivouac, which is not alone - at 2133 m. Now to junction above Kotovo sedlo, which climbs less than a hundred meters. Here left path to Jalovec, straight into abyss path continues to Mangart, which is not exactly crowded. We descend to Konec over scree and chain section to 1498 m. Then over exposed ledges, some secured to junction at Kotova špica - 1873 m. Here we choose lower easier path. Upper leads to bivouac above Zagače and further over Mali Koritniški Mangart (very demanding) to Huda škrbina and on to Mangart. Already before this junction interesting chain section with chimney and chains steeply down - adrenaline. Then on narrow serpentine, grassy, precipitous paths direct to Mangart. Below Mangart we join Italian path to summit. Here we run into real processions of hikers descending. At the hut you see huge number of cars on both sides of border. Follows a bit unpleasant ascent over polished rocks to summit. Here we hug and congratulate for conquered peak. We hardly exceeded the norm up - nor were we much faster. We walked moderately, cautiously, without big pauses. Of course photos take time. Back same way, no other way. From Kotovo sedlo to hut in Tamar goes really express, so night doesn't catch us. To car already in slight dusk. It was long, strenuous, but unique. We had nice, not too hot weather. In the morning we walked almost to Mangart base in shade.

Congratulations for magnificent achievement. But I'd just note on picture 23, that the hut is located much lower than at 2122m.

CarpeDiem247 - thanks! I'm very glad for every congratulation. For the height and full tour description I used available sources, because I don't know everything and found that this source also has that error. Here the hut height is listed - 1906m - I haven't checked it on the maps now.
