Hello, tomorrow I plan to go to Mangart for the first time. Is the road to Mangart saddle passable to the starting point of the Italian route? Do you recommend using a self-belay kit? I planned to take only a helmet against falling rocks...

The road to Mangart saddle is officially closed, otherwise passable, but only at your own risk or responsibility. But do take protection and safety gear with you, because there is usually a lot of visitors there.

Oh please, if you really mean up and down the Italian route, then you really have no need for SVK. Your first idea that only a helmet is needed is completely appropriate.

From the pictures it seemed to me that there was no sense in dragging SVK along I haven't been up, but I noticed SVK among "recommended gear"... since two friends are coming with me who rarely go to the mountains, I decided to ask... promet.si says the road to Mangart saddle is passable to kilometer 9, where there is an arranged temporary parking lot. I'm interested if anyone knows how far it is from that km 9 to the saddle.

From the parking lot where the signs are, it's about a 1.3 km walk along the road. At the last hairpin that turns left to the saddle, there is a shortcut. It steeply climbs all the way to Mali Mangart, where the usual path from the saddle joins us from the left. Lots of enjoyment

Janus, the thing is, the road is officially closed, but on the saddle itself on 22 August there were surely 50 cars parked; you drive at your own risk, otherwise the road is nicely drivable. The problem is parking before the barrier, as due to crowds there aren't enough parking spots. Regarding the self-belay kit, it's true that on the Italian side you probably don't need it if there's no special fear. We didn't need it; a helmet is not superfluous as you never know ... Enjoy

The road to the saddle is closed due to snow.

21.9.2013 we wanted to descend via Via Italiani, but the ferrata itself looked still snowy in some sections (exactly like the Italian route on Mangart - slippery rocks, snow on path - great caution needed). When we descended the path to bivouac Nogare, we saw we had made the right decision. Snow was present already at the entrance to the ferrata. My opinion is that it could be done on the ferrata, but one would pay more attention to oneself than enjoy the descent itself.

So what, "you all don't die" – do you sleep at night, so that there are more and more of you even in the dark on the summits? Nice pictures!

Well, lately I've been wondering more and more what the hell is happening lately, it looks almost like an epidemic of night hiking in the mountains. But okay, to each his own. The pics really turn out top-notch, but to get out myself at such an hour, well ... no go.

PFranci, congrats on the early tour and super pics... It's a nice experience walking at night, or by full moon, but the most beautiful is the sunrise on the mountain... Once you experience it, it pulls you... jax@ never say never, they say the forbidden bread is eaten the most
