Currently according to descriptions it's really not the time to play in high mountains. Snow and cold just enough to make ice and ice slabs mixed with loose snow, which doesn't give stable footing and it alternates. But I believe mountaineer of Franci's caliber was up to such challenge on the path .

The sun can transform snow too. Happened to me last weekend, late start, solid snow for a while then sun really softened it. Not very pleasant.
Wondering if avalanches at midnight are less likely than during the day. Wouldn't surprise me if so.

Ah, it's not nice that the mountains are available to everyone at any time. To those who start their ascent in the glow of a headlamp, as well as those whose path the sun already lights. And both delight us with their descriptions and beautiful photographs.
What bothered me was that a third group appears, mischievous imps who obviously don't go anywhere and award even the nicest photos only a few miserable stars.

I have nothing much to add to Franc's description of the ascent to Mangart. Just thank him for the nice pics that came in handy.
Otherwise there were no ice slabs, no powdery snow either. On the south side the sun melted the snow, most of the mountain is in shade anyway at this time, so snow stays frozen there all day, but conditions will change tomorrow.

Hi, yesterday I was on Mangart. Via Slovenska gora, via Italian valley. Slovenian [route] is "almost" entirely dry except for two smaller traverses. Italian route still has some snow. LP

@slamca: first picture taken in the forest, so it could be taken right after departure, or even half an hour or an hour after departure, before you reach the scree it drags through the forest ... and maybe the road isn't plowed to the parking at the lakes?

The road is plowed; you are right, it drags to the scree. To the saddle is then somehow so far as to drag 2 jalovceva ozebnika across.
