Relax.... I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill now. 3 pages of debate because of one photo well, a couple of pics if useful for someone to see what the conditions are like....

Hi, does anyone perhaps know up to where the road to Mangart is drivable. Has the ice in front of the tunnel already closed the road?

We got to the last tunnel by personal car about 2 weeks ago. I think the situation hasn't changed much. Lp.

I have one question that annoys some: what's the path (road) to Mangart saddle like? Can you get up there with snowshoes? Thanks for the answer.

No worries, you can get there, just not with the car

Without crampons and ice axe it won't work!

Janez, I know that. Small and large crampons and ice axe I planned to take anyway, I'll take snowshoes too. Let me say, today I headed to Ciprnik from Planica. Up to 1500 m there was a decent track, then it ended. It sank to the knees, if I had snowshoes it would probably have been OK, but I turned back. Lesson: have gear for all cases, especially if you don't know the path condition.

Just got back from the top. Today there was one dog on the saddle and 10 touring Italians. With skis we didn't sink, the dog had a bit more trudging but there are snowshoe tracks from Sunday and you get nicely to the saddle, to the top it's clear how and with what. Best Bruno

Today I went from the bridge over Mangart stream to Mangart saddle (partly by road, partly by marked path). It's not that demanding a tour, but I still needed all winter gear and snowshoes from the first tunnel on. Without snowshoes walking would be tough, crampons from the last tunnel. Right after the tunnel there's a steep slope with hard snow without made steps. Also mention that from the first tunnel there's an excellent toboggan run (quite icy, small crampons recommended for descent) about 3.5 km long.

Janez, where is that bridge or how far can you drive? This sounds pretty interesting

I meant the bridge on the road from Predel pass towards Strmec and Log pod Mangartom. Ločanka - based on your remark I saw I was wrong and already corrected it.

Interested in the conditions on the Slovenka route. Given the cold and wet May, I assume it's still icy and full of snow? Has anyone been to Mangart recently? What are the conditions? Thanks.

If it's icy, even better, no need to scratch the rocks too much with winter gear

Today a quick one. Waiting for sunrise, skiing a bit beyond the last tunnel and walk to the valley.

Is there still snow on the Italian route? Can it already be reached without winter gear?
