Žiga 22: "...mobile phones attract lightning..." When I was preparing an article on lightning in mountains a few years ago, both physicist and meteorologist assured me that this is not true. Maybe science has advanced in these years.

Maybe it was misunderstood; it doesn't attract anything more than the mentioned bunch of iron or conductor (keys, pitons, etc.), but given that there were reports of people being struck while on the phone, the issue is not negligible.

The phone can't be any factor for lightning. Neither can a piton or key, unless they are exactly at the top of the mountain. If lightning hit the person on the phone, it happened because he was simply the tallest conductive object nearby.

As far as I know, when there's a higher chance of lightning strike, one shouldn't establish connections or make calls. Besides, where lightning is flashing around, we generally shouldn't be there, even though there's a saying that it can strike from a clear sky Regards!

May 2014 Škrlatica, inexperience, underestimating conditions, head through the wall, trap and rescue of trapped on SE ridge of Škrlatica: http://www.m-foto.si/?p=7889 Let safe return to the valley be your first priority, good luck. I advise the three hikers to choose appropriate ascents and attend a mountaineering course.

And again sad news, that made sad faces for everyone. We lost a mountain lover, accident made an end to the heartbeat. Our sincere condolences.

On yesterday's tragic accident. In the mountains she sought heart's joys, but accident turned them into a place of sorrow. Tears soothe heartache, words of condolence addressed to her family.

Every electronic device normally attracts lightning. A turned-on phone through micro circuit emits its el. magnetic field (that's why frequent use is harmful to humans, because it disrupts natural frequency of cells 600mHz and wavelength 0.5m). A certain voltage potential is created, which as a foreign body in airspace attracts higher voltages, i.e. lightning. Without crampons on frozen ground no way. Condolences to relatives.

Lightning happens due to many megavolts of voltage potential between clouds and ground, so the tiny EM field created by a mobile phone has absolutely no effect on the direction of lightning movement and the point where it touches ground. This is influenced exclusively by air conductivity and combination of height and conductivity of potential targets/objects on ground. True, between equally tall metal and wooden pole it will choose the first, but such a dilemma only if both are close enough. Otherwise atmospheric conductivity is always more decisive/critical. The object it strikes is usually the one unlucky to be slightly more conductive than air, mainly unlucky to be raised above surroundings. Can't be shorter.

Sure, bands of differently charged electrons where most conductive vertical air layers form play a key role. But if they are not expressive enough or electricity in air evenly distributed, then lightning seeks other paths and resorts even to negligible sources of el. magnetic fields or metal objects, tall objects, poles, wires etc to find and run shortest path to ground with minimal resistance of air or ground. Bele talked about this and in such rare cases mobile phone is carrier medium for lightning strike consequence. About those poles I wouldn't agree at all. Poles can be 1km apart, but lightning in vicinity of those two will always choose only metal one. Namely lightning voltage potential when approaching ground always jumps to conductive materials with low resistance and can completely change path of conductive air corridor. Wood (if dry) is insulator, like glass etc.

Go moderately ahead and don't overdo it too much. You'll have plenty of time for individual ascents in life, no need to take everything with one spoon. Sensibly and good luck!.

For all of us to know, what unimaginable work mountain rescuers do. Our serious accident depends on foreign hands, mountain rescuers nearby. After a serious accident a person lives another second, minute, two, 5 or half an hour etc., all depending on quick intervention. Above all big thanks to them, Dejan you know, without that foreign help you'd be writing blog hm more viharnik would know to write
