That with tear gas is really good! Bear doesn't attack human unless it feels threatened. If you spray it with tear gas, then try convincing it it's not threatened.

One or the other should quietly leave.

lynx you're absolutely right. I was in California - there are tons of bears in their parks (Yosemite, Sequoia, ...). They pose no danger to humans, only food must be out of reach (otherwise they make a mess), and many get run over. A bear won't attack a human - a bear mother with cubs that you surprise is the only danger. If we're loud enough, we scare the bear mother away before we even see her. Personally I wouldn't try tear gas (only a rifle shot) - in an extreme emergency in which I would never lie down on the ground and wait. I'm not faster than a bear - it definitely catches a human if it wants to.

Usually they smell you before they hear you, because our scent carries farther than our vibrations. In California they got most problems with (black) bears themselves, because they started feeding them. Once accustomed to humans, only trouble follows.

Thanks everyone, so best to count on bears not being aggressive and retreating on their own... I'm glad too that none of the hikers here have encountered a bear up close in our hills. I've heard about lying on the ground and playing "dead", then you're not interesting to the animal, maybe it really works. Somewhere they advised to make yourself "bigger" than the bear (raise arms, sticks, put child on shoulders...) - so the bear gets scared... hm, wouldn't try it, because then the bear probably feels threatened

A bear is a small joke compared to rabid worms. Look at the worm in the picture.

Why can't I be witty??? When reading really bad inventions about bears, uncontrollable laughter overtakes me. Writers who have seen bears only on TV or in ZOO scatter their "experiences" all over our dear country. Really poor students! I'm sure you haven't met a live adult bear in nature yet either. In Slovenia so far only bear mothers have attacked "smart" intruders, defending their cubs. But we have in Slovenia a very small animal that has already caused a lot of disabilities and more. That number can't even be compared to the rare ones injured by bears. This nasty very small creature is the tick. This worm was photographed on November 9, 2014 in Kočevski Rog. Haven't seen one that big yet. Have you?

>"Bear spray" is one of the official defenses ... "Official"??? Does that mean it was approved by the national bear association or something?

Darinka4: I'm glad you didn't meet him. I didn't say everyone meets him, but that there are people who have seen him and that there are definitely bears on Nanos. I definitely don't want to meet him!

Today a hunting dog of the German pointer breed got lost under the Vojak hut. If anyone meets or sees it, it has the owner's number under the collar (Petra, 040 370 828). Thanks to all!

Yesterday finally to Suh vrh. In early December the ice storm twice kept me from the top, now its consequences are clearly visible. Above 1200m there's lots of broken trees and so all marked paths to Suh vrh above that height need clearing...

Does anyone know how the gentle path from Razdrto to Nanos is, if there's any snowdrifts? Thanks
