Pilgrimage to St. Višarje

Despite a not very good forecast we didn't expect a particularly nice day, but after a week it was time to at least move a bit . In the morning we drive to Trbiž and head up to Višarje on the pilgrimage path. Dense cloud mixed with occasional fog was what we expected, so not too disappointed. The lower third of the path is dry, then snow starts. Snow depth increases with altitude, on Višarska planina and towards the top it's already 30-50 cm. The path is trodden, no problems. Occasional glimpses of bits of blue sky fill us with optimism... maybe it won't be so bad after all? And finally we reach the sun, but no views yet. At the junction to Kamnitega lovca it turns out the path there is also trodden, but since we know how it is up there in fog , we skip it today. Then the joy suddenly starts... first Montaž appears, then Poldašnja Špica, then Viš... but we "catch" the views literally for seconds, as fog rolls here and there revealing and covering peaks. At the top by the cross it's only slightly windy. On the bench behind the church we find warm shelter. The sun is really warming, so we stay for over an hour. Then we do another loop around Višarje, back to the valley. And another surprise... first Ponce appears, slowly Mangart and Jalovec reveal... we slow down and wait for clearing and wonderful view. So, more than satisfied with the day and glad we set off in the cloudy morning . And obviously chose the right ends for hiking...

Thanks, kaveljc and Flora1... but on the webcam you can see snow steadily melting... it'll need another good "shipment" for proper idyll up there again...

Just my humble opinion. Gita with her companion did a nice hike, had great conditions for photos, which she used well too, so Gita all praise from me too, why did my friend Adi have the mountain hut closed, so they didn't stop there!?

Igor, thanks! Yes, it's true, for photos you also need luck with the weather and of course use it as best as possible... And yes, Adi - Mr. Mešnik had it open. Honestly: if we had known him, we would surely have entered, but on top we were so glad for the sun after the "foggy and cloudy ascent" that we wanted to enjoy every minute of it... and my companion surprisingly had no need for some "goat" that sometimes "appears" to him when we climb some hill ...otherwise we've already heard and read that Adi is a friendly guy and we'll surely visit him this year, as we plan to go up once with skis too...via Florjanca...and we'll wait for snow to fall and for you to make the ski track ...so we'll know where to start, since we haven't gone from that side yet...

@kozorog, this hiking tour is relevant only before the ski resorts start operating, so the snowcat will pull the new track @mountain lover, on the pilgrimage path from Žabnice in winter most people go with snowshoes and skis, the track is usually quite good, but without that gear you could have real trouble. To Višarje there's also a gondola, the lower starting station of it is not hard to find, as it's a pretty big structure and properly marked.

Igor, is the start of the pilgrimage path from Žabnice easy to find (if you have a map at hand)? I haven't been to St. Višarje in winter yet, it's high time I fix that. What about the path further to Kamniti Lovec, is the skin track pulled there too in good conditions? Thanks a lot and lots of winter pleasures ahead!

Perfectly simple, about 200m from Tarvisio direction before the roundabout in Žabnice, turn left, where you reach the parking under Višarski Graben (path is marked), alternative is to simply drive to the parking at the lower station of the Višarje gondola and walk to the start, anyway you'll ski down then, as far as I know you're a touring skier. To Kamniti Lovec there's usually a skin track pretty quickly, as it's a quite popular goal. But there are some avalanche-prone spots. Check out one of my descriptions on TK-gora from previous years. best regards
