Pilgrimage to St. Višarje

After I did this path for the first time four years ago and described it, now it pulls me every year, well last year it didn't go because there wasn't enough snow at that time. Nothing to add, 10 cm snow on Trbiž, around 40 on Višarje, cannons were working, weather was great, views too.

I went once from Žabnica, left the car a bit above the lower gondola/ski lift, path was widely trodden, and it was very nice for me.

I go from this starting point:
seznam gora-Julijske Alpe-St. Višarje (1766m)-path:Žabnice/Camporosso and Valcanale-St. Višarje
Park before the no traffic sign and/or dead end sign. Then up the asphalt road through the settlement, past chapels and crosses to Višarska planina and right above the huts to the top. Good walk and nice views to you!

Before the deterioration of the weather, today's cold and sunny day was perfect for a tour. I decided to take it to the Holy Višarje too. I drove almost to Žabnice and just before the roundabout turned left onto the side path, soon reaching the parking area. From there I take path No. 613. That's also the old pilgrimage path to Višarje, where signs start about halfway and end almost at the end of this path. The path runs along the Lussari stream and is quite steep in the second half. In between I pass Višarijska planina and the new ski slope to the top. As always, the views from the top are wonderful. Today the Višarje ski area was not operating, nor the new slope connected to Florjanka on the other side. I return back the same way. Great winter tour with skis or without them.

First 20 minutes we carried our skis, as the path is occasionally a bit icy and with stones on the surface. Then to Višarska planina along the pilgrimage path, difference being that in the last part you have the new chairlift overhead. Well, then along the new, marked and trodden path through the forest to the subpeak. On the summit you find people of all sorts, from skiers and hikers to a city lady in high heels and fur. In the church the priest was handing out holy cards, the huts full and overflowing. Skiing down the slope was okay, I thought it would be icier.....hard base, lots of artificial snow on top. Our first ski tour this winter was fun, weather and views excellent.

I'm wondering if anyone knows from which side it would be safest (due to avalanches) to go to this nice panoramic hill?
Nice regards and safe steps.nasmeh

Safest is by gondola from Žabnica, if on foot then along the pilgrimage path, recommend snowshoes. No avalanche danger there currently.

Skalaš70, great idea with your question, Igor's reply helped to the final decision to go on pilgrimage again yesterday. It really felt like a pilgrimage, lots of us and among touring skiers, snowshoers and boarders also those without gear on their feet. They sank quite deep. Views again very nice, somewhat fewer vistas spoiled by clouds. They wrapped and hid even the protagonists Montaž, Jalovec and Mangart. Still another nice day in the mountains. http://stezeinsledi.blogspot.com/

At Holy Višarje it's always nice. For me nicest in winter. And best the day after snowfall. Like today… nasmeh. Although the wind swept, it was so gentle that it spared the spruces and bare larches and left their white decoration that yesterday's snow put on them anew. And the clouds were friendly too… grazing so high in the sky that they didn't deprive me of the views…

The pilgrimage path was in the afternoon already a real highway, »plowed« by touring skiers, snowshoers and walkers and there was enough space for all. Completely different was Višarska planina. Walking across it was definitely the nicest part of the tour today. To my great joy it welcomed me calm, quiet and untouched, only one nice touring track led across it. Real balm for the eye and soul amid all the ski bustle around…

Ascent to Holy Višarje is not some prestigious ski touring tour. Not even sure if it counts as ski touring. But still nice… for a sunny afternoon, to enjoy views and refresh fitness a bit…mežikanje

P.S. Nice zigzag touring track was visible also in Krnica under Klobuk towards Kamniti Lovec…

Snow has melted, flowers bloomed, touring skiers, snowshoers and other winter enthusiasts replaced by pilgrims… and snowy moments followed by rosier and hotter ones. nasmeh

Promises must be kept sooner or later and last sunny Sunday was more than suitable so the question »when do we go to Višarje« wouldn't linger, which of course caught some more ears on the way and from duo became a group.

At Višarje it's really always nice. But true that pilgrimage attracts even those who aren't regular hill climbers. For them it surely leaves a special mark in the soul, be it due to decent altitude, views, pilgrimage energy… or simply a day spent in good company. mežikanje

One question re St. Višarje. Does anyone know about the mass language? Read on a blog it's nice because masses in all three languages, but wondering if that means all masses in three languages or just some? Mainly interested in tomorrow's mass at 3pm. Hope someone can tell me something about it, thanks in advance.

On the TK GORA website you have a description from Saturday. Since people are surely hiking the pilgrimage path every day (recommended snowshoes), there's probably not much difference, just more snow now.

The pilgrimage path is a wide hardened path that would rather need crampons than anything else, if not on skis, of course. Most were sliding down there today in long strides on skis; only a few of us trudged on foot behind. Ski slope quite full too, winter will last long. They didn't take me to confession.zadrega
