From Kluž to Rombon, I had full winter gear with me, as I feel safer carrying it, to the top without issues, very little snow, in company.

From Bovec to 1313 snow up to one gojzer, from there snow cover increases and crust breaks under load now and then. Like that all to Vršičev. Around 1700m asl snow very hard and without crampons and ice axe can't go further. This time we went straight from Vršičev to top of Veliki vrh. On summit last wind deposited quite a bit. No trace of summit log box and it'll be like that for a while. We descended through Naku.
Before new weather worsening took advantage of good snow conditions upper part and enjoyed.

Nice! Thanks for the description of conditions and pics! What do you know about how it is from Zavrzelno?

Jonny, on Friday during the descent from Rombon the conditions were good. Even on the north side of Čukla, where there is usually a lot of snow deposited, there were no issues. At "bolnica" we took off crampons, below Goričica we didn't need "kumašlnu" anymore.
After Saturday's heavy snowfall and strong wind, the conditions on the mountain have completely changed ... gotta check on site again mežikanje

Today on Rombon from Kluže. Morning still some sun, which soon disappeared behind clouds that gathered around the peak. Trail hiked in just over 4 hours. Short shower on descent that spiced the walk on grassy slopes. Descent back to Kluže.

Yesterday's trip from Kluže done, nice, morning shade, afternoon forest also in shade - but upper part in sun all day so recommend at least 3L water, careful when walking in fortress labyrinth, because we met a snake sunning or "shading" on path under broad leaf - almost stepped on it, since little path goes by.zmedeneek
Cheers! N!

Yesterday finally on long-observed Rombon via path from Kluže Fortress.
I like paths that don't start with knee-biting. This one is such, as I warmed up just right on pleasant mule track to Herman Fortress. From there the path starts ascending properly through forest. Steepness eased slightly after about 1.5 hours further, when from viewpoint opened view to Koritnica valley and peaks from Jerebica to Mangart. Higher, as path exits forest and horizon widens with each step, it wasn't important anymore. While viewing many WWI remains, karst features and ever-better views I reached summit casually. Only on descent I realized the true length, especially the steepness. 1676 gained elevation meters felt well on knees during descent.
Despite promises of a clear morning, it was the opposite. It cleared only in the afternoon. Clouds were racing around the highest peaks, so to get the full views offered from Rombon, I'll need to come again. Thanks to clouds occasionally covering the sun, the path over Rombon's grassy slopes was less strenuous than it would be in scorching summer heat.

What does this exclamation mark indicate?3
the light turns on the sensor, but it did not activate on return4
On the way to Herman's fortress I notice ornaments protruding from the wall and wonder what they were used for5
after about half an hour of walking a time jump occurs at Herman's fortress (5 hours - 0.5 hours = ?). The note on the peeled sign is closer to reality than the one at Kluže fortress.6
the path climbs in places along nicely visible steps7
Where now? If I hadn't read the route description, it would have been hard to decide correctly.8
at this junction some mountain sign for Rombon would be welcome9

Some more photos from Sunday ascent to Rombon. To Čukle without winter gear, somewhere below gully I put on crampons, took ice axe. Gully was hard, at top of gully rest. Along ridge some time with crampons on dry ground, higher again snow, summit crystal views. Return same route. Later on drive home towards Kobarid decided also for Gregorčič waterfall visit. Approx 1 hour normal walk, then home Tolmin-Cerkno-Sovodenj-Gorenja vas and bit more to hills mežikanje https://plus.google.com/photos/114400986607884783562/albums/6010061999709848049?sort=1
