Sabotin

Borut Kumar wrote the following in his article about Sabotin: "The least known (or almost unknown), most interesting and hardest to access geological feature is located under the NE wall of Sabotin, where you can admire a rock shelter about half a kilometer long, carved out by the Soča tens of millions of years ago. Under the wall itself there are more rock shelters of various sizes and lengths, but they are even harder to access and less attractive." Well, of course this was written as a challenge, which I accepted and today I went to Brda successfully, as I found the rock shelters and the only spring on Sabotin. But I have to thank the hunter who gave me some more precise information than Borut. With the first ones I wandered around the hunting lodge, through the forest, found a thousand other things, but not the rock shelters. I was almost desperate and heading back to the car when I spotted a hunter on a moped who restored my hope and pointed out the right path. I'm satisfied with my persistence. The rock shelters are wonderful; if you like rock, they are worth seeing.

Winter idyll is rare in Goriška and this time it was no different. A few snowflakes, momentarily sugared roofs (on Saturday) and all the beauty was over. Already a few meters above Nova Gorica, a winter fairy tale. Up the corridor to the top of Sabotin the snow cover thickened from meter to meter, towards the top about 30 cm of completely dry snow (more in drifted places), so there was some tramping training on the way. The idyll was occasionally enhanced by the sun around noon today, all the way to the ridge.... when conditions changed in an instant: cold, a fairly strong bora was blowing, carrying snow. Nevertheless, it was a pity to head straight down to the valley, so I extended along the ridge to sv. Valentin. On the way the bora really shifts you, luckily it can't shift you over the steep walls to the Soča, as it blows in the opposite direction. Below the church I turn on the Italian side back to the starting point, no one in front of me yet... Winter fairy tales are rare with us, and if they happen, they pass quickly. Given the forecast temperatures and snow amount, this time it might last a few more days.

Today on Sabotin via the southern path from Solkan. At the top there was about 20 cm of snow, powdery like flour. Where there was enough snow, the track was well packed, under the thin layer a hard, icy base. On the ridge there are also sections where snow is completely blown away and only ice between rocks.

On the southern path the first icy snow was between rocks on the rocky part of the path, higher up also on the path itself. In the forest under the sign the path was the iciest. Although snow barely covered the ground, due to numerous hikers it was smoothed almost to ice, so crampons were useful on descent. Otherwise I had them on over the ridge too and thus carefree navigated the icy sections. Given the forecast significant drop in temperatures, the ice will hold for the coming days too.
At the top due to no wind no cold, and only by the exhaled breath could you see temperature below zero. So as many times before I waited for darkness and enjoyed the glowing colors of the fading day all the way to the end of the path.
Although the winter idyll on Sabotin has faded from yesterday to today, the colors of the setting sun gave new inspiration.

Today on Sabotin also via the northern path. Snow on the north side reached almost to the railway line. On the lower part of the path it was frozen to icy, but it was possible without crampons, which I put on for comfort only when the steepness increases. Towards the top, where there is more snow, there was no ice. For descent crampons are definitely a welcome aid.
From the hut and refreshment hut I continued along the ridge towards the hunting hut. Path untouched, snow up to knees. Real idyll that I haven't experienced on Sabotin yet. Since the snow was dry and powdery, a lot of concentration was needed at every step so that the foot doesn't stay in some rock crevice. From the ridge I descended to the road and continued along it back towards the top. At the second pyramid I noticed a newly arranged shooting trench, along and beside which I climbed back towards the ridge. A little below the top I turned right and reached the bend at the chapel. From there to the refreshment hut and to the top. Descent along the path that goes on the Italian side right under the ridge. On this part of the path there is still a lot of snow, predecessors' footprints were deep up to knees. To avoid the path over the sign, I continued the descent on the Italian side and came in from the rain under the roof, as the path all the way to the wooden hut in the forest was quite muddy.
This time I waited for sunset a little below the wooden hut, where the path already turns towards our side.
Also this time nothing of the announced polar cold. In windless conditions, which is not usual for Sabotin, and despite the mists covering the sun, a really pleasant winter day.

STOP the destruction of Sabotin!

This beautiful hill of ours, unmatched far and wide, has barely recovered from the horrors it witnessed 100 years ago, now new scars are cutting it. On the southern slopes it is increasingly devastated by irresponsible people digging new and new paths over sensitive rocky terrain.
If the destruction continues at this pace as in the last few years, it will soon be like the WWI battlefield.

Probably no one thinks of walking crampons over a bed just sown. Permanently destroying nature for a few moments of adrenaline thrill is still no problem for some.

I don't use the newly dug paths, no matter how tempting. In Slovenia there are more than enough mountain paths over rocky terrain and there is no need to barbarically destroy this little gem of ours.

Otherwise, there are also marked steep paths over rocky slopes on Sabotin, just need to step one step to the Italian side.

already from afar visible damage1
Is it really worth permanently destroying the beautiful and fragile slopes of Sabotin for some adrenaline?2

On Saturday we Polžki climbed up and down Sabotin. Weather wasn't best for views but better for hiking. Up north, down south really churned up in places. At museum met Borut who kindly took an hour to show us caverns and summit area, thanks. Nice day in Goriška. velik nasmeh

Dear Sabotin friends!

Since you know all accesses well, could you recommend to a first-timer to Sabotin more easily which way up and which down? This Saturday 2 x 2 from Nm are heading to Sabotin for the first time and we will gladly welcome the answer.

Best regards!

I agree with the predecessor, for the first visit to Sabotin the north-south classic is most suitable. Last week Sabotin nicely greened and young leaves already offer shade from the scorching Goriška sun.

The Saturday forecast is quite uncertain. A slight cool down, which is good, as two days ago it was already too hot on Sabotin. Little hope for lush views adorning our little mountain. But you can enjoy intoxicating flower scents (maybe some orchids already blooming) and viewing WWI remains.

In cooler days and good views, the path from the hut/refreshment can be extended along the ridge towards Korada. Under an hour to the junction, descend to the road and return to the hut (approx 2 km asphalt, to hut 3 km). At the second pyramid up the cleaned trench to the ridge and few steps to the hut. If continuing on the road, after 500 m at the bend join the Za koridorjem path and from there to the summit (15-20 min) or to St. Valentin chapel.

Many crisscrossing options on Sabotin, but now too hot for exploring. Bushes along the path rustle and can scare a green lizard or sleepy wall lizard.
Tread Sabotin respectfully and do not use new churned paths on the south side spoiling its beautiful slopes.

End the trip in Brda, where it will be particularly lively in Šmartno this weekend (13 km from Solkan), or drive to Dobrovo (+3 km).
