In the morning in nice weather we drive with my wife by car to Kranjska Gora where we park at Hotel Erika. On foot along the road towards Vršič and then towards Slemen's Peak, but only to the Vratc saddle.
The road to Vršič is mostly dry, only in the upper part there's some snow here and there, but passable with winter equipment. Towards the saddle and as seen further to Slemen's Peak it's well trodden, old snow is hard and doesn't sink much, new powder is only 10 to 15 cm. Since the snow is hard, at least to Vratc crampons are recommended due to sliding risk, of course also gaiters.
We were rewarded with very nice views of our and neighboring mountains

Nice greetings to all and happy in the mountains next year too

When the weather is nice, it must be used.
Yesterday was perfect for it. By car to Vršič, then on foot. Although at 7:30 am the thermometer at Vršič showed +4 degrees, the snow on the Mojstrovka avalanche was nicely frozen. The beaten track to the top of Slemen's Peak is quite welcome. Snowy whiteness and blue sky especially emphasized the winter idyll. On the north side of Mojstrovka the sun won't shine for a long time, so the snow is dry and one sinks in up to the knees. I wanted this trip for the winter view of Jalovec.

Slemen Peak this time without crap on the top and in beautiful sunny cold and slightly windy weather, on 22/01-2011. Unlike summer time when there are more tourists than mountaineers up there, we were the only ones that day. Two ahead of us turned back at Vratica pass because of wind, hope our track will encourage someone elsenasmeh
Towards Vratica pass1
Beyond Vratice on the Sleme plateau the view reaches all the way to Grossglockner...2
...stops at the shaded Nad Šitom head and M. Mojstrovki3
... and on the sunny S. and V. Rateški Ponci4

Follows a very shady and very deep path6
... towards the sunshine and the goal7
Just a little bit more8
... and the sun shines9
In the endless white I turn back10
... and in an instant I forget the goal ahead11
12
I literally freeze13
... and I don't care about numb fingers14
When I regain awareness, only need to go through the highest lying dense larch grove to the top15
...to draw a spur to the summit16
On the trail captivated by beauty and full of impressions you return and when you find yourself again at Vratica...17
...the Škrlatice mountains have just received the last sun kisses of that day18

Yesterday we only at mid-day managed to escape the foggy valley…jezen…and since we despite short time available wished at least a little "taste" of high mountains, the walk to Slemeno Peak was a super choice…nasmeh

GITA, how about winter gear (ice axe, crampons)? Needed?

Gita, wonderful photos, I see you have crampons; are they really needed for Slemeno Peak?

"But be careful in Winter for snow avalanches"... I read this about Slemenova Špica on Summitpost, but is it true that there is avalanche danger, as we plan this weekend for Slemenova Špica.

It's a matter of judgment… Slemenova Špica is such a nice little hill that many will say you don't need any gear. We had it of course, as always in winter, and used it. If we didn't have crampons, for example the descent around five pm from Vratc, when all that softened during the day had already frozen, would look weird and be dangerous on the very icy track… Also one hiker we met on the way up at Vratci and who was already returning was fully equipped. Yeah, and gaiters were useful too. From Vratc onwards there are spots with so much drifted snow that you can easily sink to your knees and more…. Good luck!
