Gore123 - you won't go up there with kids, the path continues with scree to the gate! Otherwise snakes are everywhere, endangered is only the first in the column, if he clumsily steps on it. Dragonar - viper assesses the target and injects a certain amount of venom. If you're lucky it just bites without injecting venom. But I wouldn't rely on that. Enough that on a narrow path someone asks who ssssi!!!! and reflexively you fly off - possibly into the abyss. Tested! Now it all makes sense to me - mean as a snake.

Where do you all find them, these little snakes? I also wander around, but always "rattle" with sticks, just in case. So we don't meet and so that no one on the narrow path asks who ssssi, as @čarli.si vividly wrote. A few days ago I watched a show in which a young snake lover nicely said a lot of good things about these walkers. And I remembered that the poisonous ones have vertical pupils. So, upon meeting them first look them in the eyes to check if they are really as dangerous as they seem to us.

What, do you first nicely ask her to wait so you can look into her eyes? Otherwise snakes are shy animals and avoid people. It is true though, if you step on its tail it defends itself. So careful step in the mountains. Regards

This specimen was photographed on the eastern path to Košutnikov turn. It didn't let itself be disturbed at all, so I had to kick a stone into the bushes next to it, so it slowly withdrew. I wait a minute and I continue too. And we both had a nice day!

⁄@miri, a bit cold for them. I just saw that in the bottom right corner there's a piece of another snake?

I was descending on Thursday on the path Za kopico. Somewhere at 1900 m I heard strong hissing. Among stones at a distance of 1.5 m I saw a snake, as thick as a thumb. It had a zigzag stripe (is that an adder?). When I stopped, it calmly disappeared. The lesson from this is to listen and look, while making as little noise as possible, then you can avoid them. One must be especially careful when climbing with hands or when wanting to sit down - those are my assumptions.

In 1995, when I was the caretaker of Koča na Klemenči Jami, I often observed these interesting animals. Of all experiences, the one closest to my heart is the event which, thanks to the viper and the lizard, solved a very unpleasant and almost unsolvable matter. Near the hut grows the "thickest larch" in Slovenia (Larix decidua mill.). A marked trail to Krofičko passes by it. The larch is just a few meters off the path and droppings from careless hikers accumulated by it. Nearby, 30 meters away, I had my observation post where I often watched the viper and lizard living in perfect coexistence, three meters apart they had their "homes". The smell of droppings bothered me, since I was observing for hours, even whole days when I had time. I was also afraid for my protégés (viper and lizard) that someone might threaten them. Then it occurred to me and I wrote a sign. "You are in the area of the alpine viper, do not threaten it in its living environment". Soon I noticed that there were no new piles around the larch anymore, because due to the "poisoner" no one dared to drop their pants anymore and with one blow I chased two flies. The sign is no longer there today. It was in someone's way. To my great joy, a friend told me that even last year he saw the lizard nearby. Three hundred meters away the viper. Whether it's coincidence, I don't know. But I'm glad these interesting animals are preserved.

Interesting story. Maybe the snakes took matters into their own hands and chased away the unwelcome hikers ...
