I would say that too. In the mountains the black variant of the common viper is quite common. Black snakes are smooth snakes, widespread on the coast.

@Bojan_A: The photo shows the Black viper. It's hard to understand that some still don't know the basic snake species around here... . Best!

You look at the pupil and you know if it's venomous or not, if it has a narrow pupil it is, otherwise not, black viper and smooth snake are very similar, only one has slightly different scales on the head.

Yes but you really have to look up close, at least at my age it's like that. I always remember the one where someone asked how to recognize a rattlesnake (that was of course in America), and got the answer not to worry, when he sees it he will definitely recognize it

I thought it was a black viper too, I ask to make sure. Otherwise I rarely run into snakes in the hills.

The black viper is actually the black variety of the common viper. With black color it attracts sun rays, because it lives in the mountains where it's colder. It's a legally protected species, as are ALL other snakes in Slovenia. But unfortunately very few people are aware of that, so many snakes end sadly. Also many people don't realize how important snakes and other reptiles (all protected) are for nature.

I met this one today above Planina Kuhinja, it was completely calm and didn't give any warnings, so you get even more scared of it. It was right on the path.

This horned viper surprised me on Saturday about 20 cm from the first anchor on the Razdrto - Nanos path. I've never gone over the rock so quickly and bouncily...

Tell me, what's the probability that a snake bites you if you're wearing high mountaineering boots and, say, step on its tail (they say the snake rises to 1/3 of its length). And also - in some table I saw that the amount of venom if bitten by the horned viper as the most venomous snake is significantly smaller than the lethal dose. One layman's question - is medical help even necessary in this case?

When it bit my acquaintance, he was under observation in the outpatient clinic. Due to the risk of hemorrhage they advise against any exertion.

@Janez, probably it depends quite a bit on which part of the body it bites you, if e.g. in the head or neck, it's probably much more dangerous than e.g. in the ankle area.

@carpediem, you're probably right, but - honestly speaking - what's the probability for that? Unless you exactly run into a snake dangling from a tree, the snake usually bites the leg or - especially when climbing - the hand. Everything else is almost science fiction.

On Saturday morning on Komarča I almost grabbed a young horned viper (I'd say first-year), because I flinched too much and screamed, we didn't make a selfie, but each secured it in her own way!

Young venomous ones are more dangerous than adults. Because they don't know how to "dose" but squirt all the venom right in the first "contact".

On Saturday I encountered this snake (in the picture) on the "future" cycling path Solkan - Plave. It was dark gray in color, with a cubic pattern on its body (like a checkerboard)... Can you tell me what snake it is? Thanks and best regards Andrej
