Right Macesna, below the summit of Begunjščica a few years ago I ran into a black adder, in those areas you mentioned there are really lots of snakes. Hence the name Kačjek below Korošica.

You can see them in Bohinj too. A few years ago I saw an adder (in black mountain version) on the path that runs a bit above the road going along the lake towards Zlatorog, about 200 m ahead from Skalca.
On the other side of the lake, where the pastures are, below Vogar, there was a nose-horned viper.

We can encounter snakes just about anywhere in our mountains, highlands and valleys. Often we pass by without noticing them at all. Lately I've been more attentive to them and see a lot. Last year over 30 on my hikes, this year already half that. There are areas where there are more snakes and you'll almost certainly see them there, elsewhere they're rarer. But they are extremely shy and beautiful animals. Easiest to spot them in the morning when they haven't warmed up from the sun yet. Then you can get a photo from closer up.
Regarding Macesna's post above about snakes in Bohinj: In the mountains mostly adders, most in the Bohinj mountains on the southern ridge from Soriška planina to Krn. In the valley mostly nose-horned vipers.

To those who believe more in old recipes, this Valvasor advice might be useful  :
Early in the morning on an empty stomach take a live snake's heart and swallow or eat it alive, then drink a spoonful of pure water, and that day no snake will be able to bite or harm you; you will be able to catch it and carry it in your hands without danger of injury. I have tried this myself and given snake hearts to many, which helped everyone to be protected against snake bites. Against vipers we arm ourselves with their own heart, handling it as described above. No matter how venomous and stout they are, you can grab any this way without harm. All this rests not on empty faith but on nature, and whoever combined reading on sympathies and antipathies with experience will not doubt it at all.

Can anyone help me identify what snake this is?  It seems to like garden snails, I'm just curious for precaution.

You recognize venomous ones by eyes (vertical pupils) and they are shorter and stockier (long up to max 1 meter). Of course there are exceptions but not with us..

Poor young nosed-horned viper surely hasn't recovered from my scream yet. He just crossed the path on Stol, a bit above Prižnica.
Even from the photo he sadly ran away, so I can't attach it (well, the tail is visible)
