Closest to the nose-horned viper, which has dark rectangles on its back, often forming a zigzag pattern . . .

Maybe it's the dice snake (Natrix tessellata). Appearance: Usually grows to a length of one meter. Above the basic color is olive green or dark gray. We recognize it by the dark (black) spots on the back in checkerboard shape, but it can also be completely black. Due to similarity to vipers it's often called water viper.
For photo google it or check kacofon

I disturbed this one last year during its meal. It did let go of the prey but didn't abandon it and wasn't pleased at all by my presence, which it clearly showed.

I agree, if I were looking for it I wouldn't find it. But last year I ran into them on at least ten hikes. I don't like them but they are part of my mountain going and I've accepted that.mežikanje

I met these two today on the path to Košutica. First one at about 1300 m in the forest below Planina Korošica, second one right below Hajnževo sedlo.

High probability that the snake was young, as they release all the venom on bite, while adults usually don't. I had a similar bite myself about 2 years ago on one of the paths on the Italian side of Kanin massif. After the viper bite I impatiently waited for venom reaction but it didn't release it. Still the bite area hurt for several days.

@klm I'm curious if you had long pants and it bit through them or if you were in shorts.

@kgregor, nice.
Planina Korošica above Ljubelj (and above it - towards Hajnževo sedlo and on the slopes of Košutica) is a known snake area. You see them there without trouble, especially in May and June. Whoever wants to see an adder in the wild will surely see it there.nasmeh
