I already thought, given the time of year, that the snakes are out too early.... You posted your pics a bit late for the season.

Hehehe, Žiki was always up for fun, I've known this story for a long time. When Žiki was still caretaker at Jama I went up 10x a year, now it doesn't pull me anymore.... no more such caretakers.

Well, he didn't watch just the snake, he had a big pig too, if I'm not mistaken, walking around! Regarding snakes there was also an interesting story when he was caretaker at Okrešelj with his son, who one nice day said there was some animal under the trees that "won't let itself be grabbed". I think they cut some trees around the hut then!!

I remember that piglet, like a puppy it was and walked from bench to bench, entertaining hikers. And he also had a blind kitty that survived over winter alone and despite blindness hunted mice around the hut to survive.

Probably never forget the jackdaw from Planšarija in Robanov kot, there around 1975, year up or down, it carried pebbles into our boots, also untied our laces, but never let itself be caught, and that roe deer that drank from your hand! Uh, when memories flood in........ Sorry please, I know it's "snake" forum!

No, then I'll tell something about the previous topic...(it's also history like "cicova") you reminded me of this story Sometimes we took the bus to Rogovilec and then to Robanov kot. Then we slept at the farm or at the planšarija. Early in the morning to the mountains and then return with the "Zagrebčan" on Sunday afternoon from Logarska back. Once I met halfway to the planšarija Robanov's cat. She too was waving her tail towards the planšarija. When I arrived at the planšarija I told them I had met their cat in the forest. They told me she was carrying kittens to the farm. Every year before kitting she went to the planšarija and then carried them back to the farm, where she cared for them. It's almost an hour's walk one way from the farm to the planšarija.... lp (I also apologize for the topic that doesn't belong here...)

I read geppo's writing, where he apologizes that his writing doesn't belong in this forum. Why not? It reminded me of the year 2000, when my wife Betka and I were caretakers at Loki pod Raduho. We had a dog Kara (Saint Bernard) and a big house cat that diligently hunted mice and voles on the pasture. Of course she also ate some too-slow bird. When she littered kittens, she (deposited) them in the bell tower of the chapel. Because tourists rang too often, she had to relocate them somewhere. Where else but into Kara's kennel, where they were completely safe since they understood each other. The kittens grew, a lot of food was needed. The cat hunted nonstop, but it was still too little. One morning at dawn I met Kara who brought a wild hare from her morning "hunt" and gave it to the cat's kittens. Unmatched solidarity. A couple of days after this event something happened, that's why I'm writing this. Midday I met the cat dragging a good 120 cm long snake-like "GOŽ". She called the kittens from the kennel and the feast began. For the next meal about half the snake remained, which the dog buried near the woodshed. The point of the story is that within an hour's walk around the hut at Loki neither then nor today has anyone seen poisonous or non-poisonous snakes. The then livestock shepherd at Javor assured me of this, who spent practically his whole life there as a forest worker and 10 years as hut caretaker. And many more things happened with our cat and her kittens. Maybe about that some other time and elsewhere.

On the way to Šplevta we experienced that two squirrels pelted us with cones somewhere under Brinova glava and they weren't shy at all, as if they were angry because we were walking there! We couldn't believe it, and moreover higher up we met a big viper that was just swallowing a forest mouse; when we went around it, it continued peacefully enjoying its lunch! Nature sometimes shows us really incredible things, well this I can attach here because a snake is involved

I'm glad that on Mr. Ziki's recommendation I rediscovered this forum. On my web album I also have some photos of reptiles with which I had quite a few concrete encounters in my life; I recommend viewing the album, and I promise that from now on I'll show up more often, because I have no fear of our snakes, but definitely respect, caution and an attitude towards the right of coexistence. link to album: https://picasaweb.google.com/105542164406791269945/KajZiviNaMojemGruntu#

Mr. Rak, I report that poisonous snakes have already started here on Solčavsko. Although "one adder doesn't bring spring yet", this first one was already sunning yesterday (on St. Gregory's Day) "ON ITS SPOT" WHICH THANK GOD CURRENTLY NO ONE EXCEPT ME KNOWS. Maybe I'll drop by soon with a pic of my friend or female friend.

Yesterday on St. Joseph's I saw at the end, where I spotted adders in previous years, some nice specimens again, even though there's still about a meter of snow around there.

I on my ranch in Posavje (Sromlje) haven't had luck with nose-horned vipers this year yet, maybe next week when I go down there again, snakes will be more "lively", then I'll drop by, with pic of course.

I'm curious if anyone has experiences with poisonous snakes and dogs? 14 days ago I went from Jakopa and of course almost stepped on it, well if it bites me nothing happens.. but I have a small pup.. in all years we've been climbing our mountains I never even thought of snake, until last year when we from Viševnik almost stepped into it. since then I have quite big jitters

Bojan, you met a non-venomous snake named črnica (Hierophis viridiflavus). Already last year I thoroughly studied our snakes and I know we have 11 species of snakes in Slovenia and only three venomous - nose-horned viper, meadow viper and common viper. Quite common are also kobranka, navadni gož - desired in the garden, smokulja. L.P.
