That's a smooth snake. Just a young one.

Watch out, there might be brothers and sisters nearby too.

I thought of that too. Probably at the neighbor's house. It's been empty for many years. But I don't know what they feed on before they grow up?

Although it didn't happen in Slovenia, I hope it's still interesting. 30 years ago I worked in equatorial Africa, in a village on the edge of the jungle. One day towards evening there was commotion in the village and everyone rushed to the village edge. Since we were curious we went to see too. Locals were more than 20m from the palm, 2 were felling the palm. When the palm fell they immediately moved away, set fire to the undergrowth under the palm so the nearby palm also burned. After asking what was happening we learned that children found 3 young green mambas under the palm, which meant there were surely more young mambas in the palm and this way they destroyed the whole brood.

Hello, today during autumn chores in the garden I ran into a nest of such young snakes. They were extremely nimble and bit if you teased them. Are these perhaps young smooth snakes, or something else? Isn't it a bit late for young ones, since it's already quite cold? Thanks for info.

Thanks SamoK, even though they're small (approx 15 cm) they can bite quite painfully.

Because I got a bit too close to one (macro shots), it bit me anyway. Then I ran to first aid - bottle of schnapps, a bit on the wound, a bit in the stomach .

Snakes always move away, unless you corner them or threaten them otherwise. In my life I've met only one snake that didn't want to move away, and I've met a lot of them already.

This one was basking on the path, then it finally moved away and Nino and I continued through the Karawanks.

Peter, they pose nicely for you . Where did you disturb them, if it's no secret?

Nice greeting! Yesterday my cousin and I in Kamniška Bistrica (near Domžale) ran into a snake in the water, we almost stepped on it! I managed to photograph it, can someone tell what snake it is? Thanks! Link: http://imgur.com/a/FBJx5 Regards, Jaka.
