Snakes in Slovenia

this was (Laški) Viper... you rarely see it in the valley, where the modras has almost completely driven it out

you must have been very quiet so it didn't flee earlier nasmeh

I agree with vandica that it could also be a grass snake.. at least regarding surroundings (water) and broader area (lowland central Slovenia) grass snake is more likely... the very pronounced grass pattern bothers me.. happy to be corrected

Grass snake more likely. Laški viper lives in Slovenia only in the far west, plus venomous snakes don't have such long tails.

Wikipedia says we find Laški viper in Slovenia in Breginjski kot, also on Sabotin and Korada. Anyway as far as I know Soča river is the border up to which it's found. So this is probably really grass snake.

Laški viper definitely not, stripes and head shape raise doubt whether it's a viper at all.

This'll probably be the smooth snake, a colubrid. Not venomous, but very aggressive.

@J-kob, you photographed a horned viper. There are plenty of them along the Soča too, LP nasmeh

Just a reminder to be cautious (which is never a bad idea):
- Vrh Jelenkamna, about 2 meters above the middle "bench", slightly to the right towards the ridge edge, where those few rocks are, a small smooth snake has been staying for the second summer season. When it notices a person it of course immediately retreats or freezes; still it's probably not safe to sit nearby either in the grass or even on the rocks. Any panic is of course unnecessary.
I also add that catching and killing snakes is prohibited in Slovenia.
Lp, stay safe!

Hi! On the way to Crna prst I met this beauty. Is it an adder?

Is this a black snake? I saw a similar one yesterday on Gradiška tura. Only it was gray-black and long. I couldn't photograph it because it fled under a rock and the rattling of its tail was heard.

It could also be a common adder (Vipera berus) or asp viper (Vipera aspis), completely black specimens are less common than with the common adder... however, I'm not an expert. lp

It looks really similar to an adder. Gož has a longer narrow tail.

If you don't know whether the snake is venomous or not, best follow this advice. Step close and look into its eyes velik nasmeh

I'd say it's a common viper in the picture.
