It can bite quite hard if you step right on it, otherwise they hurry off as soon as possible or play dead. Not venomous anyway. I have some experience meeting them - at Bukovniško Lake in Prekmurje there were (at least used to be) quite a few.

I wouldn't call the bite "quite". A mouse bites harder, not to mention a snail. Slovenian snakes are harmless, cute, shy animals. The smooth snake is one of the most interesting and unique.

Snakes don't attack at all. For the smooth snake to bite you, you have to at least grab it badly. It will never bite you by itself.

Yes true. But they can also hiss. Writing some from experience, some heard and conditionally: "IF". Didn't really measure the bite strength Otherwise snakes are nice and necessary, like everything part of the life cycle.

Sorok, smooth snake puffs when very scared, doesn't hiss.

Lots. Plays dead, completely curls up, has open mouth and secretes horribly smelly substance. Quite scary, especially if large specimen.

I had a terrarium and snakes at home once, even the bite of a non-venomous snake is very dirty and we often have trouble with infection

Thanks for your opinions. There they usually bathe. The water is clean. But I've been seeing snakes the last two years. Before there weren't any. Otherwise dragonflies fly over the water. And my experience too, although I was thinking for a while whether to swim or not. And I did. All the swimming snakes retreated then, then swam back. I think fear is unnecessary.

Darinka, a few years ago they filmed a movie titled "Dances with Wolves". It was a worldwide success. If you film a movie titled "Swims with Snakes", success can't miss

Haaaa, your imagination works well for you. It wouldn't work, because I've never touched a snake in my life. I just observe them. And talk with them. Then they just disappear. Especially adders, as a child I watched plenty, but none ever did anything to me. They are a lazier sort. Even that baby specimen that strayed to the yard, I carried in a glass farther to freedom and it waited till I photographed it and crawled into the grass.

Here it's still not possible to attach pictures . Maybe the snakes rebelled themselves

I also thought it was not possible to attach pics. Then I first posted text. Then I went back to the text and uploaded pics. It worked. lp Jože
