This is how a viper watches us along the path to Stari Ljubelj, we're used to it, almost always in the same spot

This beauty was yesterday along the path in the grass towards the top of Svinjak. When it heard us it retreated into a hole. I could see its rear end, so I examined it closer. Alpine viper.

It's not alpine viper. Those are black.

Yeah just the other day on top of Kal in Knskem pogorje we saw two vipers. They weren't far from each other. But one was completely black, the other like this one.

Yeah, I saw one on Rombon sunbathing fatso, surely 5 cm thick at the hips, maybe it ate something tasty,

Experts say the black ones are out in the sun a lot, while the light ones prefer shade

In the encyclopedia it says it's the common viper. This one, which wasn't afraid of us, was male, females are more brownish in color. Those that like to sunbathe apparently aren't on Svinjak. It's too steep and they can fall.

That's why they have crampons But you can't see them, because they hang right on steep, sun-facing slopes and probably also use an ice axe

These black ones are really black from the sun, I think just like Berlusconi told Obama that he got tanned

And a few more encounters with "female" vipers in September.

Darinka, when you meet a viper or smooth snake, do you take it in hand and look under the tail or ask it what sex it is

The snake isn't from Slovenia actually, I saw it in the Carnic Alps, and I'm interested in which one it is. Thanks and best regards!

Hi @jaz, I think you encountered a dice snake. At least from the pattern, which is poorly visible, I somehow conclude it's a dice snake. The tail is also thin and longer than on a viper. Maybe someone else will respond. Best,

Definitely not a viper, to me it pulls towards a horned viper
