Špik

This weekend was quite demanding. It started on Friday with ice climbing in Mlačca – we still have ice in Mojstrana, continued with skiing from Špik on Saturday and Vajnež on Sunday.

To Špik we skied up via Lipnica. This variant turned out more ski-friendly, as most of the ascent can be done on skis. Conditions for skiing ascent from this side are good, for hikers rather bad – in the upper part there would be a lot of trailbreaking. We skied from the top through Kačji graben. The descent was super to the tree line, below it skiing from Špik always turns into a fight with trees. That day quite a few came through Kačji graben to below Frdamanih police, there they probably all turned back. Among them at least one hiker, so the ski track is nicely chopped up.

Yesterday to Vajnež through Medji dol. Although the view from the highway doesn't inspire much hope for good skiing, it was excellent again. Snow starts soon after Trilobit hut, on open slopes it was super. The overall impression was again spoiled by the forest in the lower part and the dwarf pine belt below Kamitnik. Hikers have already reached Vajnež, so people are coming.

But conditions are fully wintery now, without crampons and ice axe nowhere.

On Sunday it was trampled to the end of the tree line, from there someone even nicely chopped up to below Špik, then apparently gave up. We waded to the top or the male part of the team did it nasmeh

, so now it shouldn't be a problem even for hikers.
Snow base soft, sinks about to the knees, only the part below Špik summit has firmer base, which is the nicest for walking. There was shelter, on top moderate wind.
On descent the sun had already nicely hit the path and softened also the lower forest part.
Of course ice axe, helmet and crampons are mandatory gear.

You park the car at the bridge over Pišnica and head towards the hut in Krnica...that is along the left side of Pišnica..after about 15-20 min fast walking you have the turn-off for Špik over the gully...the path is strenuous and can sink a lot, so I suggest an early hour...

Ascent to Špik at sunrise via path through Kačji graben.
Path dry almost to start of scree, then snow patches, only at end of scree vast snowy area, in middle also remnant of old slab. Snow is windblown, at night and morning hours still nicely frozen, so nice to climb to top, remnants of tracks from predecessors. In summit part already some scratching on rocks, for skiing quite uncomfortable.
Nice to sit on top in peace in morning spring sun, winter season slowly departing... nasmeh

On 1.6. I was up there, there's still quite some snow, but it's soft and sinks. For the descent I needed an ice axe for safety

I was on Špik on 6.6, through Kačji graben, one snow flank still there, but soft and you can bypass around. Upper part completely dry. Had crampons and ice axe, but didn't need them. Lp

Was on Špik on Thursday 18.6. From Krnica to summit and then down through Kačji graben. It's all dry now.

I too was with a buddy on Špik on Thursday 18.6. To summit from Krnica, descent over Kačji graben. Path and views are exceptional, most important for this route is good fitness.

Probably the lower part through the forest will be the most difficult, because everything is soaked. I don't know about the stream bed below after such downpours, can it be crossed? Snow probably won't be problematic.

Yesterday on Špik. Past Koča v Krnici up and down via Kačji greben. Snow only below the entry into the final wall along the path over Kačji greben. Perfect for glissading with crampons.

I was also on Špik on 26.6.2015 from the Krnica hut. Descent same path. Weather and conditions wonderful (all dry). Unfortunately lost my black softshell Kilimanjaro jacket on descent, if anyone finds it.

Today on Špik. Ascent from Krnica via Lipnica, descent through Kačji graben. Ascent without heat (recommend early start), descent through Kačji graben - fast, steep and boring descent.

Probably the only living beings under Špik today next to me

Don't know what the Martuljek dwarves cooked yesterday in the mountains but they smoked the whole group. So Špik and area were mostly in mists, only Prisojnik sunned most of the morning.
Ascent via Lipnica no issues, on descent on wet Kačji graben some acrobatics and balance recoveries. Today a bit to stretch legs by bike to lunch on Slivnica.
