Last year's visit to Planina Pecol and Vrh Strmali impressed us with such a beautiful unforgettable experience that we had to return – this time with starting point at Špik Hude police; to my joy I found out that the name has nothing to do with the ascent, as the path is quite safe and «non-vertiginous», it just zigzags quite a bit, especially in the upper part over scree and stones, and you need some fitness too; nevertheless you have to be careful, as we met a mountaineer who had bad luck with his ankle, so really, accident doesn't rest; temperature down there in the basin was recording killing heat, but escape to such height fulfilled the expected pleasant natural cooling of overheated bodies of mountain addicts; on the modest, slightly windy summit quite a few hikers crowded, many foreigners among them, some also from Montaž direction; for really unforgettable close encounters numerous whistling marmots took care again in the initial part along the flowering and resinous path, but they have very «good ears» and swiftly dashed to their burrows before I managed to press the shutter; continuing in the rocks, beautiful chamois honored us, posing from a distance of a few meters as if aware of their majesty; and on top vast views, occasionally covered by summer mists, on Montaž, Viš, Kanin range, then Sv. Višarje and Kamniti lovec……; due to slower pace while fully enjoying all these beauties, we rounded off the trip in a good 5 hours of walking, concluded again in the cheese dairy with sinfully good cheeses and cooling feet in Rabeljsko jezero; real heaven on earth…velik nasmeh. sandra@, yes it's marked, although description says one part (short) isn't; it's all so trampled that you can't miss, because it's trail all the way; it's beautiful; lp

Today though with son to Špik Hude police. Last year I went end of August and there was virtually no flowers. Now one could call it mountain of relict violets, so many there are. Path is pleasant, chamois posing. On summit it was blowing, so we quickly withdrew from top. Nice, not too long and demanding tour.
This is how it looked from the parking lot.1

Above the hut we turn right, the left path goes to Montaž.4
The path is picturesque.5
There is no lack of beautiful sections.6

Of course the main attraction of Špik Hude police are chamois. They are so domestic that they hardly move away from the path.9
10
They do not dislodge stones.11
Towards the top-there was quite a crowd.12
Peak13
The box is there, but no stamp.14
A couple of photos at the top.15
We quickly headed down as it started to blow furiously.16
All around only high peaks.17
On the descent path, a look at that trench below the peak.18
Last look from the parking lot more to the left.19
On the opposite side below the peaks there is still quite a bit of snow, that thing below winding like a snake is scree.20

yes normal that in July on ski slope no snow, since already in May I carried skis almost to Gilbertija, snow is on north side of Kanin, also at entry to Via Julia.

I'm curious how on 19.07 with road closure Rabeljsko jezero - Sella Nevea you got to Pecol?
like
velkavrh21. 07. 2012 06:00:54
Yes, before that section where from slope quite some rocks tumbled onto road there was really closure sign. Before closure we stopped and pondered what now. Very quickly we had several cars behind us and they nicely overtook us and went on, we behind them. On way back we also drove behind some returning same way. If alone on road I would turn around.

Yesterday our goal was Špik Hude police (2420 m) in neighboring Italy. The path led us along the Soča road over Predel to the settlement Sella Nevea. In the settlement, at the sharp right bend we turned right straight uphill on the narrow road to the Pecol pasture. We park the vehicle on the large parking lot and from there our today's goal is already visible. The morning temperature was only 12 degrees, but from the Pecol valley there were magnificent views towards Montaž, Špik Hude police and the other surrounding peaks. We continued right towards the Rif. di Brazza hut, after 20 minutes of walking continued past the hut where signposts lead us to a fork right towards »Terra rossa« 2h, straight ahead to Montaž. The path to the summit is not strenuous but really pleasant and scenic. After a good hour of hiking we first spotted four chamois grazing and the higher we went there were more and more. Of course we heeded the warnings of hikers from the description on hribi.net and put on helmets. I mention this because we saw with our own eyes along with Austrian hikers how a chamois (young one) stepped on a loose rock and triggered stones that rolled down the slope. Also when they graze and cross the slope they dislodge stones which luckily stop after a few meters. On the summit of Špik HP the views were occasionally worse due to fog descending over Montaž, Viš and surrounding peaks. The view towards Višarji and Kamniti lovec also wasn't the most convincing. Definitely with good weather views reaching far around. On the summit and along the path we met a mountaineer who was anything but well-shod and thus challenges misfortune. The return passed with beautiful views over Pecol valley and towards Kanin range.

Is the road closure towards Sella Nevea already removed?

Oj, we were on 29.7. on Špik hude police and there was partial closure on the road (on the lane to Sella Nevea), but we went right by and all was ok. Also back when they were working we went by without problem.

How to cheer up someone who loves mountains and give her the nicest day for her birthday?
Simply, invite her to the MOUNTAINS.
And that's what we did.
Start yesterday from Planina Pecol, which is outstanding, almost fairy-talejezik.
The path led us over beautiful meadows past the hut "Rifugio di Brazza" to the old easy military mule track that took us to the top.
All the time views to Montaž, Špik Hude Police... took our breath awaynasmeh.
On top we toasted the birthday girl and beautiful views even to Viš...velik nasmeh.
To the celebration soon joined choughs and a herd of curious chamois.
Day perfect, birthday girl almost speechless, we too when we saw such happy facevelik nasmeh.
As the sun welcomed us on arrival to pasture, so rewarded us on descent with sunsetnasmehnasmeh

It was a wonderful day for us all 4.. Especially for our celebrant.. Nice day, nice visibility, pleasant and playful company and right on top chamois came to greet us.. No hurry anywhere.. Before we got to the car, bright little moon lit the path. That gave us poetic charm... In short it was unique !!
