Up via Sovatna, down via Gamsovec to Luknja. Except Pihavec which is closed, all paths around there are b.p.

Today I went to Stenar Vrata, Sovatno, Kriški podi, and ascent to the summit and back the same way to the junction to bivouac under Luknja and along Bistrica to the goal. Day was more foggy than sunny so there weren't many nice views. After descending from the summit I got off the marked path as the fog was thicker but I found my way and got back to the right path with GPS helpsmile

Has it taken away some snow this week or is it still frozen?

reze11, is winter gear needed for Stenar? Pictures are fantastic.

mkrasev: No, winter gear is not necessary. In the upper part of Sovatna there is some snow, but it poses no problems.
A bit more caution in that part, and it's fine...

I'm wondering what the conditions are like for Stenar from Vrata? How far can you drive by car? How's the snow for ski touring? Is it better to go up over Sovatna and down below Škrlatica or the other way? Thanks for answers...

Saturday 28.3.; Friday's snowfall missed Vrata, so no new snow. Old snow up to waist and more (not frozen). Several avalanches already over Sovratna, afternoon snow there heavy from sun and avalanche-prone. We tramped to last crossing below Stenar, turned back there for safety-avalanche reasons (snow was "crumbling"). Great weather and trip though.
Parking lot at Aljažev dom, no new snow.1

Yesterday's visit to Stenar, up and down over Sovatna.
Nice and quite hot day, lots of ibex along the path, not too much traffic on this end...despite loads of cars in Vrata.
Sadly saw people harassing ibex. Cameras let you photo from a few meters away, no need to disturb animals up close.

Let me break the two-month Stenar fast, as this two-thousander hosted Naja, Rajkot and me in nice Tuesday weather. Down low real pleasure walking on leaves, above forest fog cleared and then whole day pure poetry. Snow was minor obstacle only 150m below summit at two or three spots, but old cats had safety sorted. Summit had bit of wind, so we snacked and martinček-ed a bit lower. Met no one except chamois and ibex. (who are school holidays forvelik nasmeh)

Towards Stenar summit there is probably still a patch of snow hard as concrete, at least on Saturday it was so, from Križ to bivouac almost no snow.. Crampons and ice axe still take along! Attaching 2 photos.. Good luck!

Morning at 6:30 with wife from Vrata over Sovatna to Stenar. In good 2 hours already lounging below Stenar watching very lazy ibex. The snowfield below it had softened a bit, we bypassed it without problems. On top enjoying beautiful views and warm sun. Hopped to neighboring Križ. From Križ along the ridge to Stenar Gates (some climbing). Left the gates and straight down scree below bivouac. But very bad conditions on that side of Stenar Gates (wet rocks, very crumbly). Total 7.5 hours (including good hour break)
Beautiful day
