Personally, this spring snow doesn't suit me at all, as spring offers so many nicer places (where you can observe the awakening of spring), if you don't force yourself too high. Ideal months for visiting "snow-covered" mountains are from December to around mid-March (depending on temperatures).

In April and May, I prefer to visit somewhat lower (but no less beautiful) peaks. For our rocky beauties, the time comes again in June. wink Grassy peaks like Storžič and Karavanke (at least from the south side tongue ) usually lose snow a bit earlier.

I think we'll get some more snow before summer. wink

kristina:
I initially didn't plan to reply, because I don't respond to such communication.
My mistake is that I enjoy helping. And if I 100% believe in something, I 100% advocate it. I admire the one who thought of, or "figured out" such crampons. Stezosledka and her colleague wouldn't need any help if they had them. And I already nicely told at "begunjscica" that these crampons are not a substitute for crampons where you need front spikes.
You're doing the advertising, those who try to contradict in every way.
kristina, since I'm by nature also 100% optimist, I believe you surely have enough positive qualities left. If you read your posts at "begunjscica" - don't continue with such a way, it's ugly, show your better side, throw that one out the window. You just need to decide. As Domancic says: in each of us there is also a beast. But we don't have to use it.
Have a nice day everyone - dragica

I'm interested in the current conditions on the path from Kališče. How much snow is there and what conditions can I expect in the week before May 1st, when I'm heading up (if there are no major changes in snow amount). Should I take ice axe and crampons? Thanks for answers.

best, Franci

Dragica, that's your interpretation. Correctly it says: these -crampons- are not a substitute for real mountaineering crampons (not just 12-toothed with front teeth)
Chains slip the least there is, to which I was also personally a witness – during descent and sudden loads on steep terrain.. they come off. So don't try descending with them on demanding and very demanding paths!.. and please,- don't recommend them for ascents and descents like Storžič in winter!

heinz, thanks for the addition. I didn't mean for storzic in winter either. Stezosledka talks about slippery grass. For that they would be good. Definitely better than nothing. And nice regards.ps: regarding coming off. maybe they were too big. Just a thought. I know there are multiple sizes.

Fpetel1, I did the ascent from Kališče to Storžič on Sunday and didn't need ice axe or crampons. Snow was already soft in the morning, the most critical spots on the path were bare. I don't know how conditions changed after the intermediate cooling. I descended via "stezosledkini's unmarked direttissimi" and that path is completely bare (except last few meters).

But I don't know what conditions will be in the week before May 1st big

Best.

Ojoj, isn't it a shame for the keyboard and butt and fingers, everything will get worn out from laborious writing - typing. I have no problems with crampons, because I have classic 12-tooth automatic. And no problems with soft either. Because I have hard. Č in the surname.
Now enough clutter, including mine. Both sides of the coin have been presented, we all added something to the topic, each from their viewpoint, now it would be time to return to what the conditions around Storžič are like. wink Good luck!

Since I see a whole bunch of you commenting and reading here, I have one question. Has anyone gone through Psica to Storžič recently and knows what the path is like?

Current conditions on the S side:
Today I set off for the first time to "check out" Kramarca.
Started around 7.30, conditions were still super, which lasted until approx. 11.
Experienced it live - from concrete, styrofoam, ice, rot, up to water. In short, everything's still pretty soaked, except the bottom three jumps. Plenty of snow on the north side though.

**********
But I made the mistake of tackling it solo. Even before I realized mid-1st jump, or rather left bypass, that it wasn't comfortable, that I'd rather go elsewhere, it was too late. It was clear there was no way back, except by helicopter. So somehow I pushed on, pumped with adrenaline, without crampons (which I took off midway), dragged myself to the top of the jump. OK, can't get worse.

Continued with slight unease to the jump under bivouac and bypassed it on the right. At the bivouac I pondered what's next.. I knew about the right bypass for the third jump, which turned out to be true and not too hard.. Then gully to barrier, where I met solo problems again.

For the barrier under the ruins I figured the best was again over rocks on the left, right under the overhang. Crampons didn't work again and came off, one ice axe in hand and climb. Everything like eggshells, every hold wobbles, slips, under hands and feet bit of rock, bit of ice, dirt, grass, I can already see myself in hribi.net chronicle and news..
Somehow I got over the rocks, then packed snow, me with 1 ice axe and no crampons on 2 mini bumps at the barrier edge - will it hold or not? Flooded with 110% adrenaline somehow continued to suitable spot, dug out a stance and put on crampons and continued to the last jump, which was soaked - thanksnasmeh.. No major problems further, just wrecked at the top like for a long time not..

Break, fifth swig, total thaw, 0.5m drifts, bit on ass, bit jumping, bit rhythmic and alive to the exit.

Where I promise myself that such solo projects are off at least until the next life.
Next time I'll enjoy much more when there's a straightened rope, some buddy and "common sense".
Thanks, Storžič, that I'm still alive.

Hope you learned something new. nasmeh

My description of the path to Storžič, according to the latest posts, is a real stroll today...velik nasmeh. This time started at Jezersko, in "valley" Jekarica, where you can drive the car nicely to the end despite foresters. Markings followable despite fallen trees OK, otherwise by feel and hit the path to Praprotnik hut to Bašelj saddle via fairly steep path, higher snow patches but not bothersome as snow thawing/sinking, so workout not missing todaymežikanje. Path to Storžič, where Kališče path joins at saddle, dry except two initial snow patches. Alone at top, met three hikers on way back, even "flock" of ravens that nibbled snack againjezik. Down path very loooong today, had to use sun and lounge at every suitable spot. Love this path, ~2hrs to top, not more than half tour in forest unlike Mač or Bašelj. Sunny hot weather, every breeze welcome, temps insane.
Another nice day behind menasmeh

From Jekarica it's really quite comfortable and fairly short approach to Storžič if the barrier is open. If not, an hour more walking, which is not too much for experienced mountaineers. I'm curious, Rozka, if the helmet stayed home today as well, like last New Year's Eve?nasmeh
