What's the condition like on Storžič? Was anyone up there today?

The little path connecting Bašelj Pass with Javorniški has tempted me for a long time. But to not dedicate 280 km drive "just to the path", I decide also for Storžič summit. Start in Jekarica valley and already ascending I look down to the walls where I sense the path... No views this Sunday, but sights on the path exceeded all expectations. Nice circular tour, especially orientation-wise much easier than the one from the opposite side when years ago I "invented" a loop to Kozji vrh. I always like to come to these parts, since even on marked paths you rarely meet people, of course except the section from Bašelj Pass to summit and back. Yesterday it was the same.

Then under vertical walls across numerous gullies2
... past the red cliffs above the path3
and why already white under it?4
Through the forest on a path strewn with soft needles and cones,5
or thick with leaves and under which it is quite steep.6
I arrive under the steep wall which fully surprises7
adorned with golden decorations.8
Just as I step from the forest to the saddle the sun shines for a moment9
also on the sign10
and on the rich flower garden around it.11

Conditions on Storžič at this time depend on the approach direction. We went today from Jekarica and it was really spring-like. Path to summit is 99.99% nasmeh dry, to Bašelj Pass there are three or four really small snow patches to cross, which don't pose big problems, further to summit snow is negligible. As much as we could see, from north side it's still quite wintry…
On the way to Bašelj Pass we didn't meet a soul, if not counting a really numerous chamois herd in the forest that we obviously startled unintentionally and they fled before our eyes on their paths, at the saddle another hiker joined us who ascended from Mače. Even ravens didn't feel like flying in for "lunch" today in slightly cloudy and windy day mežikanje

Volk, really nice tour. Where you walked, I went last September, but at that "glider wing" I veered more to the left into the gully and, towards the summit, crossed to the western ridge and to the top. Really steep, so congratulations again.

Best regards.

Thanks, mstirn. Congratulations on the ascent to you too. mežikanje
But I'm really wondering what that 'glider wing' on the rock is for. Does anyone know anything about it?

What's the path through Žrelo like, is it dry?

There is still a lot of snow on the northern sides.

Yeah I know that, but I'd like first-hand data, because on Saturday we're going with daughter and I don't want to get into trouble, although she's used to it and knows how to use winter gear.

Just from Storžič, went to see sunrise. Start from Bašelj to Kališče and on to summit, back via SW ridge and then forest direct to partisan hospital. The path hiked is entirely dry, regarding Žrelo I don't know, but upper part of Kramarica and Peto žrelo or path over Škarjev rob is still quite snowy. Snow was frozen and if winter gear use is no issue, then no issues on path through Žrelo either (snow definitely will be), start early morning.

Despite the unpromising forecast I set off for Storžič today. From Mač past Kališče to the Storžič summit. Snow starts somewhere at 2000 m, which fell these days. Not much of it, just a few cm, so no major problems. Caution on the ridge is self-evident anyway. Ice axes still waiting.
Winter gear not needed on this trail, completely different on the north side of Storžič.

Today was a great day for the mountains. I started alone above Laškim at Bašlju, went to Široka dolina and instead of the unmarked path straight ahead, turned right towards Kališče. Bašeljska grapa was frozen in shady spots, then to the Storžič top..
At the top I met two hikers, I descended via a shortcut on the unmarked ridge path along the wide valley to the starting point.

Parkeljc: I was also on Storžič a few days ago, only I went up your descent path, back past the hut at Kališče. Otherwise we might have seen each other (mountain to mountain)velik nasmeh, since I was on Veliki vrh above Jezersko. You met at least two hikers, I saw no living soul, such a nice day. velik nasmehnasmehmežikanje

Late morning tempts me again to Stožec. By bike to the start near Sv. Lovrenc. The marked path inviting upwards is roughly a true balm for an overheated body, as it runs in the blissful shade of pines that also smell intoxicatingly. One is initially quite confused, as it feels like strolling by the sea! I warmly recommend the path. nasmeh
At the bench with signs I turn left this time. At planina Javornik at the spring below Krničar hut I refill the bottle and head on. On the picturesque path I reach planina V. Poljana, at its edge I turn up again. Soon at the junction. I take it over the Psice ridge ...
The latter seems to me one of the nicest approaches to Stožec in dry conditions. If not the nicest. The ridge is pure enjoyable, scenic stepping. It is exposed indeed, as a ridge should be, but nothing more serious. Hand on heart, even those few wire ropes (fixed protections), really just a sample, I easily missed (take it strictly subjective!). Climbing difficulties do not exceed grade 1. But let us leave that.
The fact is that the beautiful Psice ridge requires a steady step.
In a light breeze I arrive at the Stožec summit. After a long time I am surprisingly alone on it. A slightly later hour has obviously 'thinned the ranks'. mežikanje
After a short rest I head to the descent; on the unmarked path along the edge of Zahodna grapa. At the lower bench I have a sausage and descend to the start. While biking home I like to turn back ... nasmeh

Judging by the visits, Storžič was yesterday at least in this area the most popular destination. Initially planned start from Zalog, but morning mistake turned towards Bašelj. No problem, as I hadn't gone to Kališče from here. Drove to last parking on quite battered gravel. Don't pity the car, otherwise leave it right after quarry where asphalt ends. Quite stony path leads to Košuta hospital and further to planina Kališče. Path pleasant. Nice views of Storžič today. At 8:40 already on top. Some hikers already descending. Alone on top for a moment, then someone from Žrelo came. Said still quite some snow. On way back met hikers continuously. Before Kališče turned right to Lovrenc. Soon found water spring. Water so cold it burned. Path pleasant, cleared and well marked. Before Lovrenc turn left to unmarked path that brings almost to parking.
