Storžič

From Javorniško sedlo to Storžič.
The path starts steeply right away, later flattens a bit, here we meet some hikers returning to the hut under Storžič. The wind is blowing stronger, we hurry a bit to the hut. At the top Štefan signs us and we continue the descent on the other side towards Mala Polana.

Today 19.10.2013 finally back again on the mighty stožec above Gorenjska fields. Ascent through Žrelo and along the ridge to the top, descent via Čez Škarjev rob to the hut under Storžič. No snow on the path or on Storžič. Path through Žrelo without major features, only at the start of the first fixed cable rocks were a bit damp and at the exit at top of Žrelo also, but nothing special. Path along ridge sunny, but wind was blowing hard all the way to the top so it was quite wintery up there with gloves, hat and windbreaker. Quite a lot of people at the top. View to north and towards JA and KSA really excellent, down towards sea foggy. On Škarjev rob one fixed cable is loose and on the path 4 or 5 sheep carcasses, people rushing down kicking stonesjezen. Lots of scree on the ground, watch out for that. Nice tour and Storžič is really jewel of KSA.

Today via Žrelo to Storžič, back via Škarjev rob. At the beginning of path through Žrelo rock is slippery and greater caution needed. Weather excellent. Nice greeting

If anyone reads this in time and can advise:

Tomorrow I'd start from Laško and go up via Javornik, down via Kališče (or maybe better the other way?). I'd park higher, at the starting point described for Kališče. Now, what really interests me: on more detailed maps there's a supposedly unmarked path a bit after the end of the road from Kališče path towards the one from Lovrenc to Javornik (e.g. on PZS Storžič map or here: http://www.geopedia.si/#T184_x454005.5_y132325.5_s17_b5). Does anyone know how visible it is or maybe even marked from one side or the other?

Thanks.

If it's early enough: from Laško to Javornik it's better to ascend than descend, because downhill the knees suffer due to the steepness. Descent from Kališče (towards Mače) is generally more friendly. Unfortunately I don't know the connecting unmarked paths. For the ascent to the summit, the one from Kališče is significantly nicer and passes quicker. That path from Javornik to the top drags on for me like chicken guts velik nasmeh So you'll have to decide yourself. LPnasmeh

Yesterday 26.10.2013: Mače - Storžič (via Kališče). Path slippery in places (due to moisture and to Kališče due to leaves) otherwise super day, sunshine ...

@micamaca
Exactly like that... descent from summit to Javornik is nasty, same then from the bench to Lovrenc, but ascending would be even worse. Views from Kališče are of course much nicer, and uphill you look around more than downhill, if nothing else due to fatigue. On the other side from Kališče you climb a bit over rocks, which is easier up than down, so for a circular tour I definitely recommend this direction Laško(Gradišče)-Kališče-Storžič-Javornik-path towards Lovrenc-Laško.

How it went: Parked under Gradišče at the end of the road, plan was Javornik, IF we find connection to Lovrenc path. But we didn't, because it's marked on maps a bit higher than road end (maybe it was once, but no trace now), so we went up via Kališče, then down towards Javornik. At Javornik just before the hut keep left, marked direction Kališče. After 20-30 min nice visible path downhill and bench by it (signposts only for ascenders, left to Javornik right to Kališče). Steep path downhill drags again, but when you see sv. Lovrenc hill ahead, path levels and widens to track, on left square wooden post with Gamsja pot mark on other side and direction Gradišče, red marked also on tree by post. Path nice visible and marked with yellow-white marks, some KM too. After good 5 min to track, turn right/down (marks too), when to road left if parked at end.

Reverse direction no problem: from road end down to big sign Gamsja pot and right to track, soon left to described path, then right up to Storžič. Or all via Lovrenc, then straight to Storžič or right to described path and then past Košuta hospital to Kališče.

Will add photos later.

In beautiful sunny weathernasmeh on a holiday, we conquered another two-thousander. We ascended to Storžič from Bašelj via Kališče and returned the same way to the starting point.
Weather idealvelik nasmeh, views to Snežnik, Kum, Peč, far into neighboring Austriamežikanjemežikanje and of course our Julijci as on the palm of the hand.
For today, as I write this, the summit is probably already in snow.

Bogi probably right, yesterday's picture was completely different...no views, strong wind, fog and even sleet accompanied us from Žrelo to summit. Least wind at the cross. We returned via Škarjev rob, went also to monuments for those perished in avalanches and to the one for avalanche victims. Somehow matched the holiday weekend...

Today I went to lower Kališče to check what and how many fell.
Road to stream is passable as they removed all fallen trees. From stream along path quite a few fallen trees so path "changed" in several places - where do you take it??. No snow on path but quite some mud.jezik
I think further from hut no major snow issues, as I think it blew away, anyway recommend winter gear and sensible head

In winter, you always carry the gear with you and use it as needed after assessing the terrain on the spot.

I agree Viharnik.
The path from Laški to Kališče is really quite devastated. A large number of trees lie right across the path. No snow on the southern approach. But it's drifted up to half a meter in places on the northern side. Ice axe and crampons not needed yet, but probably will be after the next snowfall.

Yesterday 29.11. my colleague and I set off for Storžič. Conditions from the Kališče hut towards Storžič are wintery. Up to the ascent there's quite a lot of snow, we've already postholed some. The start is quite annoying, sinking over the knees, also trampled there. To the top there's always less snow. Didn't need crampons or ice axe. Trekking poles are really useful. Good luck to all who will head to Storžič.

Start of merry December on Storžič mežikanje. Conditions to Kališče quite tricky (snow, ice...). As for the ascent itself to Storžič, I'd say like this, whoever thinks it's without peculiarities is very wrong. I won't preach, but let everyone judge themselves if they need crampons and ice axe. My general opinion is that without full gear I don't go anywhere!!! It was a nice day, with a little bitter aftertaste (wind), at moments quite strong gusts.velik nasmeh

Yesterday I was on Bašeljski vrh. Below Kališče the path is very smooth, so I recommend microspikes.
