Toll booths on Vršič and in Vrata

As far as I looked at it, I noticed that this counter often stays on the same number for some time and then suddenly jumps more than ten places. I noticed that this also happened several times in one morning. In my opinion the system is completely automatic, it's just badly made and doesn't always refresh right away for every car.

Jernejd, I don't know.. I wasn't drunk at 5 in the morning so I could see correctly - it was x, 0 places. Someone behind me turned in, and then immediately turned back onto the road.

I checked today at 5.00 and it was 35. At 5.10 it was 91. Then I checked again at 6.10 and it was 88. So now it's working and refreshing.

On the Delo websites there is (still) no article, but in the paper edition there is one with the title "Late for the bus, later to the mountains, greater risk", which deals with the regime in Vrata, with interlocutors noting that at 4am there is still no crowd, later though...

But more interesting than that is the last paragraph, where the newly elected PZS president is supposedly actively working on solutions for regular mountaineers. I quote him in full:

Quote:
More and more Slovenian mountaineers report that they prefer to avoid the Vrata Valley, also because of the high parking fee. As Šolar said (that is the PZS president, note by my humble self), during the season nothing more can be done, but the mountaineering association is striving to introduce a vignette system that would apply to multiple parking lots and could be used by all those who frequently go to the hills. »But we need to get all parking lot operators and agree on a unified system. This would mean that you pay once and use all parking lots. Here the mountaineering association is seeking benefits for its members.«
End of quote

This means an agreement with various municipalities and mayors which seems like an impossible mission to me. This would only mean a loss of income for those involved. But for someone to agree to a loss of income is unlikely.

Hja... maybe such an agreement will only come when all starting points in TNP are paid. And possibly the price of the "vignette" will be such that we hikers will still wonder if it's worth buying at all, or completely avoid this area...

Vignette system? So they will support what they are now fighting against. Namely against the mass visit to this area!
They should rather arrange these parking lots, without reducing them, so that people will at least know where they can park without fines and set appropriate parking fees for them, at which you won't have the feeling that they are fleecing you like a chicken.

Don't worry...they will make it so that we hikers are at a disadvantage..so that it won't be "too massive". There will be a reservation system, the vignette alone won't be enough. But no reservation will be needed for those who have booked some apartment zadrega

Does it really not matter at all to Šolar and his comrades at PZS and the representatives of the respective municipalities what the principle of what should supposedly be their mission is? Speechless, shame.

This was some time ago in an article on rtvslo.si:

"There should be no parking along the road and ditches. A good part of the road below the top of the pass should be limited on both sides with fences that will prevent parking along the road. However, consistent supervision will have to be carried out lower on the road, as people will probably also look for parking options there, Šolar thought."

Everyone can judge for themselves how much Martin Šolar cares about what should be the mission of PZS.

The problem is not hikers but tourists with their aggressive approach to ,,instagram photo,,...they will park everywhere and in total there are many more of them than hikers.... and this bunch at the municipality and PZS knows it, and cares about the hiker because the tourist will pay everything, hikers are collateral damage...anyway our Slovenian mountains have been occupied by foreigners whom we invite so much.... in the hills you practically don't hear a Slovenian word anymore...that's how it is, money smells good to everyone....where is the logic that in the mountain world someone who spends all day in the hills pays max price for parking, a tourist who drives up and down pays nothing or very little.ps. tourist is not burdened with arrival and departure time, mountaineer alpinist is....scam with sustainability and green transition...unfortunately the mountain world is equated with visiting large shopping centers or tourist visits to city centers....

The problem is neither tourists nor mountaineers, but that someone is not able or does not want to arrange parking lots and determine appropriate parking fees. They only reduce them and move them away from the starting points and thus create new problems. As long as it is unregulated, money still flows from fines!
But that some points are more crowded than others, we will unfortunately have to get used to that and rationally choose starting points for tours. After all, why should we go to one mountain multiple times if it is very crowded, when there are so many around that we might never visit.

Citizens of RS mostly work in their jobs. Every citizen has the right to choose and wish for their own vacation, after all they pay for it themselves. No one has the right to label any person as a tourist, hiker, instagrammer, alpinist, mountaineer etc. Absolutely every person who decides on a vacation or trip has the right to park in organized parking lots and go wherever they want, with or without a phone. What someone does during their vacation or free days doesn't concern anyone and others who feel more dedicated to visiting mountains or hills have no right to interfere with other people who are there, what they do and how long they stay. In the past we also went to Bled and took photos with a camera etc. We know that abroad everything is arranged so that working people or pensioners, children, disabled people of all kinds have the opportunity to spend their vacation or free day as they wish. Accesses have been arranged for Slovenia 100 years before us, but it is true that summer tourism is completely connected with winter or skiing and the accompanying infrastructure. And all the mountains and hills are still standing. Everyone has the right to enjoy as they please. For jobs the parking lot, factories etc. are not a problem. Fertile land doesn't concern anyone. This Vršič is a disgrace and shows all the disgrace and inability to make organized parking lots at 1600 m for us or for foreigners, it doesn't matter. I respect all foreigners I meet in Slovenia, where they all come from and what they all see and find in our small country. If there were no foreigners, there would also be very few Slovenians in the hills and at most beautiful spots. All huts could close their doors and become bivouacs.

Really? Did all huts have closed doors thirty years ago? eek

Well, if that's the case, can I visit Postojna Cave anytime (and without prior reservation), drive by car to Tre Cime or visit the Eiffel Tower whenever I want? mrk pogled

Given that each of you on the forum already has a completely different opinion, it's no wonder that the practice is equally confusingwink
Somehow we need to get to the bottom of why at certain points we crowd so much that one literally jumps on another's head. Also when we jumped to the mentality that the best thing about summer is to drive across all of Europe in the largest possible motorhomes and then create chaos on local roads in a foreign country. Closing half the roadway because our only possible goal is to push a bike 7km on foot to Predel. Going in a group of 50 motorcyclists to visit the Vrata valley. Waiting in a long line so we can squeeze across the Dolomite via ferrata. Staring at a GPS track at 2000m at 40°C and almost without water because this part of the route was recommended to us by artificial intelligence. Well, we're crazy, unfortunately. Luckily there are so many paths that some of us have long ago deliberately gone completely elsewhere...

Bojan, you can't compare those times when most of us went to the mountains by public transport. Back then the huts were really full of locals. Now they would certainly be miserable if it weren't for foreigners.
Otherwise it's similar across the border, often there are more foreigners than locals. But after a certain time everyone gets tired of visiting the same hills over and over.
And he's absolutely right when he says you can go wherever you want. Of course with certain restrictions and reservations, which is normal across the border. And it will soon be the same here. Only the prices will probably remain higher than elsewhere!

I'm not talking about vacation, because I leave the decision to each individual separately and they can go anywhere. But, given that they are talking to us about reducing traffic, sustainability and the green transition. Who has less impact on nature, the one who goes to the mountains for the whole day (once a day by car there and back) and of course spends the whole day for that or the one who drives and walks to the ,,wedge,, takes a photo and drives out. And the next one then into the valley..etc. Statistically speaking, there will always be max 200 vehicles in the valley. I've already said several times that they should turn the price list around, and charge those who come for an ,,hour,, the most. I won't talk about public transport to the valley, because people then walk through the valley on foot and hitchhike when there is no bus. And once again, this is not a ,,shopping center,, that is open all day and you can go there whenever you feel like it, but it is a mountain world, in which whether you want it or not, you are also dependent on the time you spend there. I would definitely charge foreigners more. If nothing else, we here pay taxes, tolls etc....they don't, but they are treated the same. What worries me though is that ,,local sheriffs,, following the example of Vrata and Vršič, will start behaving the same everywhere, and will put ,,barriers,, at all starting points and very high parking fees. And then ,,mountain hiking,, will become a privilege of the wealthy. Kind of like what the USA did at this year's World Cup in football, when the tickets were extremely expensive, but we know that football is a sport of the masses. And also, doctors recommend movement in nature, visiting mountains etc...then visiting the mountain is a financial luxury.

Well, who goes to the mountains and with what intention is anyway its own chapter. When on the first 1/3 of the path across Plemenice, when you're descending at 16h, on a hot sunny day, an oncoming ,,mountaineer,, going up asks if you have any water to lend... To me that's completely irresponsible....not to mention visiting Triglav.....

30 years ago, so mid-nineties, already in independent Slovenia? Not really. There were still a few more club trips organized by bus, but for independently organized tours, personal transport use has clearly dominated since at least the 80s of the last century. Even with a Škoda it went to Vrata, no need for a fancy SUV. The only difference is that back then there was no crazy tourist tourism yet. Here though, the situation has really worsened markedly in recent years, especially in the post-corona period.
