Andy, thanks! This belongs in the category IT'S NOT TRUE, BUT IT IS! What all mountain rescuers experience.

and what's unusual here? ..that the tourist is friendly? or is it just their origin that echoes so much in the news today, which all media would normally ignore if something similar happened to three locals.

Haha, I like such news. And I think even if it were Slovenes, it wouldn't just pass by (at least local) media. Anyway, the winning quote: "web navigation that doesn't show snow on the road, but there is, if we express it with somewhat less juicy imagery than the rescued tourists, unreliable"...so the GRS guys could learn Arabic alongside cursing in Czech, Polish, Italian...

From Calcita upwards everything is flowing into streams, snow will be gone soon. Paths to huts trodden.

Yesterday's weather-friendly morning I used for a quick trip to VP. From countless paths leading up, I chose the path over Rigelj, which I'm liking more and more. The ice fall is cleared, Čemaževa fields are sometimes more white than green due to abundant flowering, lily-of-the-valley time will come in about a week, in the beech forest just before the exit I didn't notice a single green tile anymore, looks like vandals deliberately destroyed them. Luckily the path in that section has become quite noticeable, so with careful walking you can't miss it. In under an hour and a half you reach the edge, which is fenced with wire due to grazing. In twenty minutes you reach the Zeleni rob inn, which is open on weekdays too. Tea 1.30€. Descent through the holiday settlement towards Konjščica planina, where there are still patches of spring sedge, snowdrops (and snow). 200m lower is Dol planina, where you turn left and descend via the same-named gully to the starting point where your car awaits.

I'm wondering how far up Velika Planina you can drive by car? We'll be spending a few days up there and I'm interested in the option of driving as high as possible and then walking to the hut.

The road goes all the way to the top You can drive to Marjaninih Njiv, but count on cm of dust on the sheet metal on the way back. Another, better option for me is Kisovec, with a bit more walking.

If you're looking for peace on Velika Planina, a weekend visit isn't the best idea. Yesterday I experienced a real invasion of excursionists (via tourist agencies), so I recommend visiting the plateau mid-week. Otherwise, besides the excursionists, there were the most cars (parked everywhere along the road). It's a shame there's no larger arranged parking lot at Rakov rob or a bigger one at Kranjski Rak. A lot has been done to promote Velika Planina. The large number of visitors is a positive result of the efforts of tourism workers, the friendliness of the staff in the mountain huts and shepherds, and also the easy accessibility of this mountain jewel near Ljubljana. Last but not least, the prices aren't excessive.

Primož, that's an excellent time for older youths. Otherwise, it's the longest access to Velika Planina. Lots of visitors from Calcit to sv. Primož, further on you rejoice at every living soul you meet at all until Velika Planina. Bravo!
