Today I was a bit angry at myself. Given the temperatures I took the ice axe with me, crampons left at home. At six start from Vrata via Brinja to Oltar. Already from afar snow in the gully was nicely visible, but at 9am still hard as concrete. So no choice but to stick the ice axe in the snow and up that crumbly terrain to the top. Oltar is a mountain where descent takes more time than ascent. Big peg under summit gone, now two smaller ones, lower has rope too but a bit short for my taste. Not long ago I climbed this part free up and down, now years have come when I'm clumsier and used own rope for descent. When returning snow had softened and descended on it. Returned past bivouac. In Mojstrana stopped at pizzeria, nice waitress said they bake from 14h onwards. So no choice but to head home. Stopped in Kranj at Zlato polje in Gorenc pizzeria finally got pizza and beer.

On Saturday I was on Great Altar. Friday afternoon after work to the bivouac. The path from Poldov Rovt is without features, locally spring-crowded. Bivouac is nicely arranged and clean, sleep was excellent. Snow starts above the bivouac, lower it can be avoided. Rokavska Škrbina is nicely filled in. To Grlo it goes even without crampons, in the gully to the summit full winter gear is necessary. There's still plenty of snow there, but it was already soft on the approach. The wall is otherwise dry. I was at the summit at 8am, but weather was already deteriorating. On return the consolidated snow in the gully was already unpleasantly sliding. Carefully but steadily I escaped to the valley, then to well-deserved beer and lunch. On the way back I fixed a couple of cairns. Surrounding mountains had few visitors, hikers I saw only on Šplevta.

Three years and one week since the last visit, and I hope the next one will be next year already. From the hut in Krnica we start at half past seven and enjoy the pleasant cool (for this time of year). Due to poor weather forecast we didn't expect many visitors in our direction and indeed we met only two solo hikers, whose goal wasn't our mountain. When I'm in Dnina, I always visit the bivouac too, as it's the nicest for me, and I haven't met Vzhodnjak here yet. Julian snowfields are at May level this year and it's a pleasure to use them. High clouds persisted all day, all peaks were visible, and we were spared the sun scorch. Despite partly softened snow, we overcame the last steep slope with crampons. Before entering the ridge we left poles, crampons and ice axe, as no need for that tool to the summit. Due to extreme friability and scree we moved to the ridge and along it almost silently, ascent to the summit itself is pure poetry.
As always, we analyzed yesterday's visit at Dani in Dovje, and the forecasted rain we survived under canvas roof.

Bojan, one opportunity will be on 29th this month, mountain run to Grintovec, champion of Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Nataša might be there too.
