Maybe someone knows the conditions on the path through Dnina? Is there still a snowfield there, are crampons + ice axe needed?

Thanks

You don't need anything. For a couple meters, right before the collapsed notch take two sharp stones in hands...

I agree.
This is the "Conditions" section and not "Superiority we show over those unaware of current conditions".

Listen Planko here's what I'll tell you, when we were in Dnina on Saturday there was still some snow, the thing is I don't know if it's that ice and snow concrete that stays late in summer and is hard, since you know yourself best and judge from the photo, but I recommend, once I dragged the crampons with me and cursed them, a bit later I put them on my boots with a smile, wasn't in Dnina so don't know if steep like e.g. Skrnatarica or Rokav glacier etc but crampons come in handy, better than turning back at 2400mmežikanje Enjoy!

@gams and Marjan, you seem like scared kids to me, which @Planko obviously isn't. A person capable of going from Dnine to Oltar is definitely not a mountain 'greenhorn' and won't stroll along Dnine with a helmet and self-belay kit. Almost two weeks ago I was on Great Martuljška Ponca, the snow is soft due to late summer and a mountaineer like @Planko will handle that snow patch playfully. The snow before the entry before the col is in no way comparable to Rokav or Jalovški icefield, where the ice is hard as concrete at this time.
Planko, decide for yourself, you know your own experiences best.
Good luck and please report!

Why should he decide alone, since his abilities - which you managed to evaluate just from two short questions about conditions zmeden - you obviously know well enough velik nasmeh

And - thanks for the compliment nasmeh

You won't meet the first snow patches at 2400, but around 1600.

@jax, the first snow patch is below 1300m, that's an avalanche deposit in the streambed that comes from Špik col and persists into early autumn. It's only a help to the hiker, otherwise he'd struggle with boulders in the dry streambed. The second is a bit below the height of the first one (2150m), which you can bypass, but it's also helpful because it's neither too hard nor too steep.
In between there's no snow.nasmeh

Well, after 24 hours and eight silly comments we finally got to the answer to the question. I don't know, I don't understand why something like this last comment couldn't be written already as a response to the original Planko's comment.
As for how much that compacted stuff down there helps the hiker, I'm quite doubtful. True, I haven't gone to check, and I'm not sure I will this year either.

Probably it's hard to answer someone who at the end of August asks where winter gear is needed on difficult pathless terrain. It could be just a provocative question, worse if it's serious.
Anyway, some of us understood the situation already from the first Tonetov's answer. Those who have walked there before don't need an answer anyway. If it's the first time, then it's as already mentioned. He should worry most about the continuation from the snow patch onwards to the top.
Otherwise, the sharp stones are a problem now, right?

We've established that there is snow. So it's even less clear to me why the question would be so stupid.
That there's still snow in August this year in many places where there never is, is just a fact. Of course also an opportunity to look down on those who dare to ask about conditions, but still a fact.

So we're at the absurdity mentioned above.

Asking about the snow patch conditions on difficult pathless terrain end of August, even this year, is really absurd.
I agree.

So, "real" answers to questions will only go to those who know the conditions - but since they know the conditions, they wouldn't ask anyway.
And if they don't ask - then there are no answers either - just like there are none for those who don't know the conditions and therefore ask...

A peculiar mountaineering Catch 22 - thus proving the absurdity of such a forum's existence altogether...

Once again, if someone asks about the state of the snowfield like that in Dnina, but is heading via the ridge to Oltar, it's definitely better they go somewhere else. And nothing wrong if a “suitable” answer on the snowfield state doesn't encourage them.
Marjan, you can twist words around and around, but that won't change the rules in the mountains. Only gear changes, mountains stay the same.
And that there’s never been so much snow there as this year, ask someone with memory.

Drago, you forgot the conditions. They change practically every day - and ultimately this forum is meant for describing these changes..

If it's already used for educating and training mountaineers too, it can be done with more appropriate and less pointed undertones than those used above...
