On Friday we start at Ruski križ, head to Krnica and begin the path to Špik. Soon we reach the junction and continue on the path to Velika Dnina. In the shade of wonderful mountains it's quite fresh. From the bivouac onwards we tackle the scree and finally enter the climbing section. At the top of Altar a pleasant sun warms my soul. Brr, it was cold in that wall!
We descend safely, lots of gravel and I check a hundred times where to step. We go towards Velika Martuljska Ponca. How vast this summit is... you feel so small and just observe the grandeur around you...
Up one gully, down another nasmeh

Below the bivouac we eye Mala Ponca too, but it still has quite some snow, so we decide (also due to afternoon thunderstorm forecast) to descend back to Krnica.
Whenever I go to the world above Velika Dnina, I feel fulfilled and excited by such beauties that this wilderness offers... Beautiful...

At the top there is a new cache (from last year)...Thanks to the two guys for the effort to place it nicely :)

If anyone happens to be tempted to visit Altar, no need to drag winter gear. Snow is on the "plain" around Šplevta saddle - DK and in the gully to the top, which you can bypass on the left side.

Today at 4:20 we start from Poldov rov through Brinova glava and on to Altar. Winter gear stayed in the backpack. Back past bivouac II and down the red stream gully to the start. At the top we had clear skies, soon after descent the fog enveloped all peaks. Early hour - golden hour mežikanje

Today past the Akom bivouac and over Kačji jezik, but only to the notch. Almost no new snow on the path. Looks like it rained more here or it has already slid down. All from Akom bivouac, past Three larches to the notch between Altar and V. Ponca the snow was frozen in the morning, somewhere hard as concrete. From the notch to Altar first 50m normally passable, then windblown to the top, rock encased in ice prevails. Here I turned back. Met a skier who planned to ski Kačji jezik. Carried skis up and down, too hard, icy in places, plus fine snow dusting. Under the tongue nice skiing. Towards 2nd waterfall and Aku still some snow on the path.

On the way back it was already sinking quite a bit

Thanks, Matic. That'll be a treat in about a week when the rock on Altar is dry. Also the lower chimney on VMP (pic. 9) looks good this year, minimal ice coating.

End of week still some snow and cooling. Rock ice-free more likely in two weeks.

Yesterday ticked off another fantastic tour from my wishlist. Approach from dvojka over Grlo in the 90s, from Dnine previous decade, this time first from Martuljek over Kačji jezik.
Trio set off at six. Morning freshness, dry ground, sky blue and good company marred only by heavy pack, had to drag all winter gear. Progressed on plan or better, nasty scree under Three Larches nicely snow-covered. Only helmet mandatory here, rest of gear used at Kačji jezik entry. Snow conditions excellent, ~50 height meters below saddle bare rock starts and so to Oltar summit. Rock quality greatly surprised me, total opposite to Dnine approach which is all rubble.
At summit alone enjoyed nearly 1.5 hours, initially some mist on surrounding hills, later fully cleared. On such super day met only two lads descending Visoki Rokav. Descended over Grlo and dvojka to Vrata, along Rdeči potok bed hellishly hot. Refreshed properly only at Dani's, who went shopping for fresh cream slices just for us. nasmeh

Excellent tour no factor could spoil for me.

From here on no crampons. The exit to the saddle is slightly right of the smooth slabs.

Above the saddle. Right Kačji jezik, left Velika Dnina.

Another ten minutes of enjoyable climbing to the top on solid rock.

During the descent. Drago is already at Grlo, having slid down the snow like a thirty-year-old athlete, while I go slowly backwards - left, right, ice axe; left, right, ice axe...

Only on the očak is there something alive.

) watching sunset on altar, what a beautiful mountain, such easy approach and so quick up that it's really one of the best, only shitty thing is, top day, even quick up and down, gotta go again velik nasmeh
