Visoki Kanin

Today circular tour Gilberti, via ferrata Julia and descent via High Rosojan path and via ferrata Rosalba Grasselli. Access to Julia ferrata easy (gravelly), ferrata not too hard and excellently equipped (bravo Italians!). On descent via High Rosojan path need to be careful. On Rosalba, which is also renovated, three pegs pulled out, but doesn't affect safety. On this ferrata cables are loose. Years ago I looked for comparison of difficulty of both - both demanding in their way, but I like Julia more, which is also shorter. Would agree with late Igor that for circular route better up Julia, down Rosalba. And about no-entry sign at Rabeljsko lake: Path closed at Sella Nevea - repairing road to Reklanska valley.

We two also yesterday circular on Kanin, up Rosalba Grasselli and down Julia. As for which direction is more recommended for circular, views obviously differ.

Hello! Does anyone know conditions from Neveljski pass, past bivouac Marrusich, via ferrata Rosalba Grasselli? nasmeh

Ferrata Rosalba Grasselli passable without issues, same as ferrata Julia usually used in circular variant. Few pulled pegs don't affect safety. But Rosalba is pleasant ridge walk that was never fully protected. Snow on descent from Julči doesn't require winter gear. More in photos ...

We chose the right 645/a for *experts*, but it is not as bad as it reads :)1
The sun illuminated Sello Neveo, but *gifted* us with stuffiness2
Path 645/a is exceptionally interesting and runs under numerous overhangs3
Here is paradise for climbers and the position of the systems reveals everything about the difficulty4
These are also walls reserved only for climbers5
Path 645/a is exposed in some places and therefore earned the name *Per esperti*. Nothing special, however.6
Some delicate passages have been newly secured.7
A walk that would not be like this without safety gear.8
The slopes are steep but passable with some care.9

Our goal ... Vrh Krnice and Kanin.14
The path partly follows pronounced karst sinkholes.15
Bivak Marušič, in memory of the mountaineer, primarily for the Rezijanskih polhov route, i.e. Alta Via Resia.16
The bivouac is maintained by Tržaško planinsko društvo, similar to Rifugio Corsi in the heart of the Western Julian Alps.17
The interior of the bivouac is in solid condition as always.18
Entrance to ferrata Rosalba Grasselli.19
The ferrata is equipped with sufficient protections but should not be underestimated.20
Protections are not everywhere, sometimes scrambling on rocks is necessary :)21

And ridge scrambling again, which is actually standard on all paths to Kanin31

Mali Kanin was reserved only for us this time35
Sign for entering the Julija via ferrata, completely renovated a few years ago36
The descent follows tensioned steel cables. The chain descent from the previous variant is unfortunately now just a fond memory :)37
All cable anchors are protected with plastic cones, as befits modern via ferratas38
The descent from Julka to the snowfield was soft enough to require no winter equipment39
Surprisingly, there is much less snow than last year at this time40
Ideal opportunity for capturing *braun boje* from all directions :)41
Incredibly many of these flowers. They grow literally from the rocks, without noticeable soil patches42

Super. We did the Krnica ferrata a day before you. But eagerly checked your pics if some sling that was 'homemade' looped on peg. That was soon at start of Krnica.
But descent from rocks to glacier not problematic?

Nena, in the last sentence I meant the final gully. Yeah, the cables on Julija look completely new. We hikers did a huuuuge loop.
We'd miss the via in Prestreljenik and the ferrata around it.nasmeh

I'm considering conquering Prestreljenik and Visoki Kanin in one day without the cable car assistance there. Plan:

-- parking: B station of Kanin cable car (970m)
-- to Prestreljenik: hribi.net/izlet/b_postaja_prestreljenik_cez_krnico/1/35/592
-- descent and soon via newer ferrata to Prestreljeniško okno
-- onwards to Kanin connecting to this route: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/d_postaja_visoki_kanin_/1/12/182
-- descent, return south, from where not far to B station: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/gozdec_visoki_kanin_cez_zadnji_dol/1/12/1744

Route descriptions everywhere recommend helmet, for ferrata Prestreljenik – Prestreljeniško okno and Gozdec – over Zadnji dol - Visoki Kanin (I'd descent there!) also self-protection kit. I believe it goes without this aid, meant more as extra safety due to many hikers, possible stones from them or animals. Despite optimistic thinking, better to have this protection? Backpack heavy anyway...

Parking B station Kanin cable car (970m)... assume free... is it free? Will I get a parking spot for the weekend and in summer if I arrive at 6am or do I need to arrive closer to 5am?

Are there any issues on this route now regarding passability or poor marking?

Probably need lots of fluid and food, smart rests, ok. Due to the length of the entire hike, if there are issues I'd end early, that is skip V.Kanin. That via return over Dom Petra Skalarja. If worse - doubt it, cable car. End maybe: Gozdec – dom P.Skalarja – Prestr. Okno – V.Kanin – Gozdec...

Thanks for help and enjoy mountains!

Just take helmet, rest not needed. No worries about parking, never issues, even suggest parking higher at roads fork to Gozdec and Krnica (check map) - easier returnmežikanje

And who knows what the snow conditions are like on the Julija path? Is winter gear needed or can the snow be avoided?

Probably the last summer high mountain day we spent this time on Kanin. The nice forecast attracted quite a few people, so there was a long line of hikers and paragliders at the lower cable car station in the morning. We also saw a marker from PD Bovec, who marked the paths around Prestreljenik and Preval that day. After the first fixed cables we saw two chamois that weren't afraid of us at all. After a longer crossing of scree we climbed a bit to the ridge that leads to High Kanin. It's really nice that this path isn't too equipped with metal. Below the summit we met crowds of people who came via ferrata Julia. Several times there was the sound of falling rocks from the wall, so it probably wasn't very pleasant there. The weather forecast scared with thunderstorms, but none were visible far around. Only a few times did fog cover the summit and views. We were on the summit for a long time and admired the interesting Kanin world. We barely caught the last cable car down. The Kanin stamp is available at Ski Bum Bar.
