Weather, weather forecast, danger...

Keko, are you a meteorologist by profession to get so upset? Since we're in the Weather, weather forecast topic, probably nothing wrong with saying something. Especially if it soaks us properly one day and we have to change the tour plan, the next day it's gorgeous - similar forecast for both days. Or even worse for the second day when it was gorgeous. No big deal, after rain comes sun or as MajaO mentioned in another topic, everything is good for something! Cheers

It's right to discuss the weather, but it's not right to blame meteorologists for inaccurate forecasts, because weather is mainly forecasted by computers. I'm quite satisfied with the forecasts, even if sometimes they're not accurate. A bit of unpredictability regarding mountain weather is completely normal anyway. Yes, today I got up on the right side of the bed and I'm in a better mood. Cheers

I remember the day when my sister and I went to Lučki Dedec via Skok, well at least that was the intention . The forecast was cloudy at night, but clearing up during the morning. The first drops caught us right at the start of the trail in the valley by the car, so we said, meh the forecasters say it will stop. Since it didn't stop raining even to the Orglice junction, we decided to go towards Presedljaj, if it stops we'll continue, if not, we'll turn back. Halfway up, our wet heads remember, what if we call the duty forecaster at ARSO? And to our surprise, the meteorologist tells us there's no rain anywhere in Slovenia on his radar!!! Well, if they say so, then we must be really "dripping wet". So we went to Presedljaj and since it hadn't stopped by then we turned back and just before the car the rain stopped too, it cleared up a bit after noon. I know meteorologists aren't omnipotent and what I wrote isn't meant as criticism of them, but just an anecdote I remember with a smile on my lips. Cheers B

@ben: instructive story, especially the call to the forecaster. Yeah, it happened to me once too, when I started from Jermanca to Kamniško and plan to Planjava. Forecast: rain will stop everywhere by morning, it poured on me to Kamniško sedlo, in the hut I dried and waited till noon for it to stop "raining". Now I'm a bit more cautiously prudent. If in doubt, I don't go, I can get wet even on the "bike", when I do a tour around home.

Stories are like that and different. Even one of the famous meteorologists years ago forecasted that the weekend weather will be sunny, sky without a cloud, he added, go to the mountains. And we went. On Sunday rain caught us, what rain, such hail was falling that I felt like it would drill holes in my head. No shelter anywhere to at least soften the pitter-patter on the head. So I could only conclude that once you have to test the Goretex gear that we buy not at low prices, then go to mountains only in good weather. Once you have to find out if manufacturers are fooling us or not. This Friday the forecast was very colorful too, some one way, others another. Experience: on Jalovec the weather was excellent. Exception that deters me from a hike is if heavy rain or thunderstorms are forecasted all day. Everything else is manageable. But the thing is, we all like perfection best, but there's so little of it, so it's not worth waiting for that.

In winter the goal was to reach Triglav, already in Mojstrana cloudy, snow flurry, what do I tell my companion, I call Kredarica, they say weather up there is ok and indeed it was mostly clear, sometimes it's good to have some digits too. Otherwise I follow zevs forum, check meteo and look at aviation forecast, almost always I'm right.

@viharnik ; and others ; readers: Sadly it's like that, that for everyone on this world once comes such a wonderful sunset that you'll never see. So let's enjoy those we see and experience and "feel" and that are only ours - mine, yours, theirs, theirs

Forecast - "A harsh end to Indian summer" at the wrong time, as next week will start with dry and slightly cooler weather, but the following weekend and potato holidays may bring noticeable cooling with some precipitation, possibly snow in places! With this note I don't want to spoil the hope for "nice" weather for the holidays. Synoptic charts are getting more interesting. Several recent runs suggest dry weather will continue next week, wind turning to E to NE. Our areas will remain under anticyclone influence, but cooler air will gradually flow in from E and NE at height. Expect morning temps from Monday to Tuesday between 3 and 9 °C, daytime mostly 15 to 21 °C. Monday, Tuesday mostly clear. Wednesday occasional more cloudiness. Thursday changeable cloudy in most of the country, daytime temps not exceeding 15 °C, mornings similar to previous days. Friday a large upper cold air core moves from north over central Europe, gradually covering parts of east and NE Europe next weekend. Models show a weather disturbance approaching our areas from NW on Friday, cloudy with occasional rain north of Alps. Mostly cloudy here, temps not exceeding 15 °C. Cold air gradually to Alps. Next weekend (27-28 Oct) cloudy with occasional rain, temps dropping, mornings 2-6 °C in most interior, daytime not over 8 °C. Snow line dropping (initially 500-900m), NW possibly snow mixing with rain to higher lowlands. Cold air wedge from N Europe to Balkans and Italy during holidays. Cyclonic core strengthens over central Europe. Coast and Primorska up to 10 °C. Holidays cold, mornings below freezing interior, daytime not over 5 °C except coast. Moderate bora on coast. Possible snow to lowlands interior if precip! Due to distance, unpredictable, but more signs upper scenario may confirm mid next week.

Why are Slovenes the only ones in Europe kissing Americans' asses using their phrase for late summer when we have our own: 'babje poletje'. Germans also say 'Weibersommer' or even 'Altweibersommer'(old women's summer ).

On Saturday there will be snow, snow line dropping below 500m a.s.l. Definitely better than last winter when snow came only in February for a few weeks. And we're only mid-autumn, what will come...

Last year similarly lots of snow fell at the end of October, but later it all melted, so we can only dream of decent snow cover. This year too it won't last

True...in my hike diary it says last year quite snowy on 20 Oct - to 500m, Kredarica 70cm (as reported), but 8 days later we were martinčkali in short sleeves on dry Čisti vrh, and trips to Debeli vrh 1 Dec I can't forget - really hot, summit barely a patch of snow...
