Östlicher Sonnenkogel is 3163 meter high peak and is part of the Ötztal Alps. The peak is located 0.5 km south-southeast of peak Totenkarköpfl. The nearest mountain hut is Verpeilhütte, located 3km west. A little further is Gsallalm. East from the summit there is glacier Games Kogel Ferner, 0.7 km northeast from the summit there is also glacier Totenkarferner. Northeast of the summit is the valley Pitztal. The peak is located on the ridge Kaunergrat.
