Eternal dilemma, at least for me, is the weight of the backpack and the weight of the clothes themselves, especially in winter time. Since I'm preparing for 2017/2018 ultralight two-day hikes, every gram less comes in handy. In this case I'm interested what, in your opinion, is more useful in our Alps - Crampons or Snowshoes? Thanks and LP

I'm interested in sleeping outdoors in our high mountains. - One night (say a 24h tour) specifically above 2500+ m.a.s.l. mainly in winter time (-18°C and below). Only sleeping bag and bivy bag count,... Slowly leaning towards Ultralight stuff. How would that work? Maybe someone has experiences with such a thing? Thanks LP

Right temps for crampons aside and chalk in hands...

No frost, started from Krma at 21.00 and back two hours ago, turned halfway (a bit below Pragarca)... Snow soft, around 40cm sinking. "Say" good for snowshoes and skis... Last time better in Krma... Recommend park at Kovinarski (except 4x4, those at parking), if at all - else not worth up... Weather cloudy... Conditions in gates (Prag, Tominškova etc) dunno... Would go but crevasses, solo off! LP

Mainly start around 00:00 conditions as follows:

1.) Krma-Kredarica (4x4 PickUps, Jeeps, IPD can park at the parking lot, we know how they look)
2.) Probably from Pragrce to Kredarica they worshiped Satan, you don't even know where and how to step, you can easily break legs
3.) Somewhere near Draški vrh there's some chalice always so be careful
4.) Above tamauga I climbed up, conditions aren't really the best, so I'll return this week via north side, supposedly from Tuesday on till end of week it'll be top
5.) Probably J routes in Slovenian walls are pretty much done for this winter
6.) Park Ranger is strolling around and looking grumpy
7.) If someone finds SNICKERS bar eats it
8.) Good luck and wisely

Cason how far by car or where did you park? And how's the snow up there? I plan tomorrow night or day after early start... Thanks LP

How are conditions for going through Y?

Early in the morning (still too late) parked at Teraž. To Peričnik without crampons you can't do anything (at least basic ones). Further, old tractor tire tracks, so to the road where Rovti are you can walk somewhat normally, even without crampons; further on you need snowshoes or the made track (shoe no. 38 )… Winter room at Aljažev dom closed (Don't get why)!? No tracks over Tominškovo, same for Sovatno and Prag. But tracks lead to bivouac under Luknja, snowshoes visible,... Ice not stable, no for screws, all you hit with axe flies in big pieces, no for crampons or without,... More ice on ground than wall,... Turn around and on way back meet only 1 hiker,... JusAvgustin, you can easily get to Teraž. Park at the little bridge (it's cleared), but to Aljaž you'll have to walk a bit... LP

Roadblock to Valvasor (a bit higher than lower ramp)... Ice on gravel... From Žirovnica to Prižnica still ok (recommend basic crampons), further lots of new windblown snow - at least 40cm... Old track but sinks, also small avalanches heard afar. No ascent for few days... LP

lijaneja How much snow approx, and how is the track?

30.6. I was in the Dolomites - Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Weather was cloudy, no heat, around 4°C. Almost no snow left, only in some sinkholes, gullies mostly on north slopes. Parked at hotel Dolomitenhof, place Moos near San Candido. Parking around 5-10€, plenty of it. Hut was still closed but opened on 1.7. PZS members have discount on services, so a bit cheaper next time. :P Staff in hut mostly Balkan, so no language issues. Path is excellent. Recommend liner gloves, at least for those of you who are cold-natured. To the top of rocks (Middle 2.999m) access only by free climbing. You have two shorter ferratas on two other peaks, so via ferrata kit not superfluous... Some pics and good luck...
