To leave no doubt about the necessary gear.

I don't get the fuss, take and use what suits you in the given conditions, some carry two climbing ice axes up an easy gully, others go up with a ski pole. Some [go to] Triglav with two, others with one ice axe, some with a helmet others without. Give it a rest, I have two identical ice axes because my brother gave me one, he bought two climbing [ones] and said he wouldn't need it anymore, so sometimes I take two because it's easier than with one. What others do they must decide themselves, otherwise pay a mountain guide and he'll drag them through the winter mountains. Don't get how some take the forum seriously, take the info with reserve.

ljubitelj gora, now you're acting smart and impartial, before you were giving advice why to take two ice axes. Decide whether someone planning their first winter ascent of Brana should take two ice axes to have one plunged in all the time, or what! Really curious. Technique with two ice axes is completely different from one, so 2 is not twice as good as 1.

@grega_z_brega, sadly, what you wrote is true. Third mountain in Slovenia by number of fatal accidents. In this black statistic is also a mountain rescuer who was rushing with colleagues to help a mountaineer. On the way to the injured, while crossing a snow-covered slope, a snow slab carried him into the valley. Article worth the attention of all who go into the mountains. http://www.grs-kamnik.si/novice.php?pid=471

I always have 2, but not to make it safer, but because it's easier for me. You probably also use only one hiking pole?

Use of one or two tools depends mainly on the slope angle we're moving on. If the terrain is not steep enough, using two ice axes is annoying and dangerous. Except in case of water ice and maybe due to insecurity we literally throw ourselves on the ground.

Stop with two ice axes, yeah. As dprapr nicely wrote - on not steep enough terrain, using two ice axes is more dangerous than anything else. Then you see idiots pushing through Turski couloir with two ice axes with leashes...yeah, he'll stop - down at the boulder

Irina, I know about this mountain rescuer, he was a fellow villager. There was quite some disappointment in the village then. Because of this case, Brana doesn't see me in winter even though I have 3 ice axes...

From these posts it's hard to understand what the best winter gear is for this extremely dangerous mountain Brana? On the forum you see pictures of ascents with different gear. 1. some advocate the use of crampons and hiking poles (easy use and comfortable walking); 2. more experienced mountaineers with mileage advocate the use of crampons and an ice axe; 3. the most experienced (LG and quite a few others) advocate the use of crampons and two ice axes. Such use even saved LG's life. Irina, thanks for this link. It very realistically describes the ascent to Brana and then the descent to Kamniško sedlo. This alpinist with pseudonym Srečnez is really Lucky twice. When you get carried away on this Okrešelj express there's no return ticket. Thanks for the opinions, although very different.

Lino, as always this time too you shoot only goats and from 10 km you can see that you have no clue about mountains.

Lino, if you need a forum for gear info, then you have no business in the high mountains in winter. If LG seems like a reference for gear use to you, then likewise you have no business in the high mountains in winter. If someone doesn't understand why two ice axes are NOT used on non-climbing tours, then signing up for alpine school won't hurt. Or read the basics in the online alpine handbook prepared by AO Rašica - there the use of two ice axes is mentioned only on slopes exceeding 70° incline...

The best is this Lino's - crampons and poles on Brana's flank!!! To croak!

I can't even imagine how you go somewhere on gentle terrain with two ice axes. You go on all fours or what?

I just wanted to know if someone knew what the current conditions are. I went yesterday alone to check. Up to the Štajerc Express it was fine, then I turned back, extremely dangerous!!

skymark - what you did is the only right thing. Don't ask on the forum where lino will advise poles and crampons, LG three ice axes. You go check, have all winter gear, then use what's needed or turn back. Nothing easier! Good luck!
