Hribovc88, my camera is already outdated by today's standards, even though it's only 5 years old, and at that time it was rated the best in its class. It was also the first compact camera with 10x optical zoom, but by current standards it has only 8 MP. I'm still satisfied with my camera, although I miss a larger zoom (useful also instead of binoculars), more MP for nicer pictures on large screens and especially full HD video. And one more note: the trail photos were taken while driving at normal speed through a closed window, and they're still watchable (of course I wasn't driving).

Once I asked Mr. Janez Medved, the one who posts wonderful photos from all over Slovenia on the website, what camera he uses. A plain Nikon Coolpix he answered, and even that one is completely taped together with duct tape. Of course, sweating on the computer he finally shapes and corrects the photos.

That's already another chapter in photography, knowledge of using Photoshop program, which is "the law" for good photography of course it's important in which format your camera saves images, with these compacts it's usually jpeg format which doesn't get as good processing in Photoshop as raw. I myself use Canon SX20is it has good zoom otherwise it doesn't stand out in its class. Surprisingly good is the video recording so I use it more for video. Lately on my trails I use my Sony Ericsson phone which has quite good photo most of my pictures on this website were taken with the phone.

I have no experience, but I can tell you that for nights it's pretty bad—without a tripod you're done anyway even with a top DSLR camera..

The more I look and browse, the more I'm in a dilemma about which compact to get. I'm looking for one around 200 euros. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, that's why we've already advised you multiple times: just buy one and go shooting, otherwise the mountains will escape you too ..I believe that for 200 euros they're quite similar—if you take a recognized photo brand, you can't go too far wrong....

Hribovc88, you still haven't bought it? I can't imagine how much time you take deciding on really important life matters

I don't want to screw up, that's the problem; I'm looking for one like that, up to about 200 euros, that takes reasonably quality photos even in the dark.

E.g., this Canon HS240 I'd take immediately, but it has a bit too few pixels for my taste, "only" 12 megapixels; if it had at least 14, I wouldn't even think twice. The zoom is solid.

Up to that price you'll unfortunately find with every one something that isn't what you expect. The more you complicate things (read "the longer you choose"), the harder it will be to decide. I wish you the best possible purchase. LP

Oh Hribovc ... I have 12.3 million on Nikon D90 and nothing is missing at all... given the size of your sensor it's actually an advantage... it's been said a hundred times that pixels aren't important on small sensors... you won't print posters anyway in the end, right?... or am I wrong?

Hribovc Canon sx240hs camera is not a bad choice if you take it, and Olympus is good too. I previously had compact Olympus sp560, it was super, although bigger camera than that SZ-15. Only the old Olympus fell on the lens, in the end it couldn't be repaired, so I got Nikon coolpix P100.
